Overview
SIST EN 12964:2002 is a European standard that specifies a method for determining the heat resistance of bonds produced by lasting adhesives used in leather and footwear materials. Developed by SIST and approved by CEN, this standard provides a clear procedure for assessing how well adhesive bonds withstand elevated temperatures during the lasting process - a critical aspect for ensuring the durability and safety of shoes and related leather goods. Proper application of this standard helps manufacturers and testers evaluate the thermal endurance of various types of adhesives, supporting consistent product quality.
Key Topics
- Lasting Adhesives: Focuses on adhesives specifically used to bond shoe uppers to insoles during the lasting process in footwear manufacturing.
- Heat Resistance Testing Method: Describes detailed procedures for preparing test samples, conditioning materials, applying and activating adhesives, and measuring the resistance of adhesive joints to increasing temperatures.
- Sample Preparation: Provides instructions on preparing and conditioning cotton canvas strips, applying adhesives (liquid or solid), pressing, and adhering the test material.
- Test Apparatus: Specifies requirements for cutting tools, adhesive applicators, heat activators, pressing devices, warm air cabinets, and weights needed to conduct standardized tests.
- Evaluation Criteria: Outlines how to assess the mode of bond failure and record the temperatures at which adhesive bonds fail cohesively under increasing heat and specific loads.
Applications
SIST EN 12964:2002 is essential for the following:
- Quality Assurance in Footwear Manufacturing: Ensures that adhesives used during the lasting process meet necessary standards for heat resistance, promoting long-lasting and safe footwear products.
- Material Selection and Product Development: Helps manufacturers and designers select suitable adhesives for different leather and footwear materials by comparing heat resistance properties, which is especially critical in products subject to thermal stress.
- Laboratory Testing and Certification: Laboratories use this standard to certify adhesives, ensuring compliance with international requirements. The repeatable method fosters global trade and cooperation between suppliers, manufacturers, and regulatory bodies.
- Supplier Assessment: Enables purchasers to verify adhesive performance claims from suppliers, supporting the procurement of appropriate materials aligned with product requirements.

- 61.060 (Footwear)
- 59.140.30 (Leather and furs)
Practical Value
Following SIST EN 12964:2002 allows the leather and footwear industry to:
- Enhance Product Reliability: Guarantee that adhesive bonds will perform reliably at high temperatures, reducing product failures and returns.
- Support Compliance and Market Access: Meet European and international market requirements and demonstrate due diligence in safety and quality.
- Improve Manufacturing Processes: Standardized testing methods result in better process controls, more accurate performance comparisons, and faster identification of optimal adhesive formulations.
Applying this standard is a vital step for manufacturers, quality managers, laboratory technicians, and procurement professionals involved in producing or specifying adhesives for use in leather and footwear materials, ensuring both product excellence and regulatory compliance.
