Overview
prEN ISO 11494:2026 specifies a standardized analytical procedure for the determination of platinum in platinum alloys, particularly those used in jewellery and precious metals. The method utilizes Inductively Coupled Plasma Optical Emission Spectrometry (ICP-OES) with the inclusion of an internal standard element to ensure accuracy and reliability. This standard supports platinum content determination in homogeneous materials with a nominal range up to 990 parts per thousand (‰), catering to precious metal alloys as described in ISO 9202. It also aligns with sampling and vocabulary standards for the jewellery sector, providing clear guidance for laboratories and industry professionals.
Key Topics
- ICP-OES Method: The document centers on the application of Inductively Coupled Plasma Optical Emission Spectrometry, offering high sensitivity and precision for platinum analysis in alloys.
- Internal Standard Element: Using an internal standard corrects for instrument drift and matrix effects, ensuring greater consistency in analytical results.
- Sample Preparation: Procedures for the dissolution of platinum alloy samples and preparation of calibration and internal standard solutions are detailed, promoting the reproducibility of measurements.
- Calibration and Bracketing: The use of at least two calibration standards combined with a bracketing approach provides reliable results tailored to the platinum content in samples.
- Reporting Requirements: Laboratories are guided on test reporting, including data on sample identification, methods used, platinum content, deviations, and relevant observations.
Applications
This standard is particularly useful in:
- Assay Offices and Analytical Laboratories: Ensuring standardized procedures for determining platinum content in jewellery and precious metal alloys.
- Jewellery Manufacturing: Verifying compliance with legal fineness and quality assurance in platinum products.
- Quality Control: Monitoring precious metal content throughout the production process and in finished goods.
- Trade and Regulation: Facilitating consistent methods recognized by national and international authorities, supporting declarations of content and conformity.
- Research and Development: Supporting innovation in precious metal alloys by providing tested, validated methods for platinum analysis.
Industries and professionals who benefit from this standard include hallmarking authorities, precious metal refiners, jewellery manufacturers, and testing laboratories involved in platinum alloy certification.

Jewellery and precious metals — Determination of platinum
— ICP-OES method using an internal standard element
1 Scope
This document specifies an analytical method for the determination of platinum on a material considered
homogeneous. The platinum content of the samples lies preferably between 50 ‰ (parts per thousand by
mass) and 990 ‰ (parts per thousand by mass). Fineness above 990,0 ‰ (parts per thousand by mass) can
be determined using a spectroscopy method by difference ISO 15093.
NOTE Lower contents of platinum can be analysed referring to this method.

4 Principle
At least two accurately weighed samples are individually dissolved in aqua regia and made up to an exactly
weighed mass. These sample solutions are mixed with an exact amount of internal standard and made up to
the standard measuring volume.
Using ICP-OES, the platinum content of the sample solution is measured by comparison of the ratio intensities
of the spectral emission of platinum and appropriate internal standard line(s) with the ratio for solutions
containing known masses of platinum and internal standard using the bracketing method.
Minor modifications are required when the alloy contains ruthenium, rhodium, iridium, or tungsten.
