General Information

Abstract

This European Standard specifies the equipment and procedures for determining the coefficient of linear thermal expansion. The standard is applicable to thermal insulating products within the tem-perature range - 196 °C to 850 °C, subject to the possible tempera-ture limita-tion of the test speci-mens. It shall not be used for products which during the test experien-ce dimensional changes due to the loss of hydration water or which undergo other phase changes.
NOTE   Because of its small dimensions the test specimen should be care-fully selected to be representative of the product being tested.

EN 13471:2001 is classified under the following ICS (International Classification for Standards) categories: 91.100.60 - Thermal and sound insulating materials. The ICS classification helps identify the subject area and facilitates finding related standards.

EN 13471:2001 has the following relationships with other standards: It is inter standard links to EN ISO 18099:2022, EN ISO 29768:2022. Understanding these relationships helps ensure you are using the most current and applicable version of the standard.

EN 13471:2001 is associated with the following European legislation: EU Directives/Regulations: 305/2011, 89/106/EEC; Standardization Mandates: M/103. When a standard is cited in the Official Journal of the European Union, products manufactured in conformity with it benefit from a presumption of conformity with the essential requirements of the corresponding EU directive or regulation.

ScopeThis European Standard specifies the equipment and procedures for determining the coefficient of linearthermal expansion. The standard is applicable to thermal insulating products within the temperature range- 196 C to 850 C, subject to the possible temperature limitation of the test specimens. It shall not beused for products which during the test experience dimensional changes due to the loss of hydrationwater or which undergo other phase changes.NOTE
Because of its small dimensions the test specimen should be carefully selected to be representative of theproduct being tested.2
Normative referencesThis European Standard incorporates, by dated or undated reference, provisions from other publica-tions.These normative references are cited at the appropriate places in the text, and the publications are listedhereafter. For dated references, subsequent amendments to or revisions of any of these publicationsapply to this European Standard only when incorporated in it by amendment or revision. For undatedreferences the latest edition of the publication referred to applies (including amendments).EN 12085, Thermal insulating products for building applications – Determination of linear dimensions oftest specimens.3
Terms and definitionsFor the purpose of this European Standard, the following terms and definitions apply:3.1linear thermal expansionreversible changes in the length of a product resulting from a change in temperature3.2mean coefficient of linear thermal expansion m between different temperaturesreversible change in length divided by the length at the reference temperature and the temperaturedifference between the test temperatures3.3coefficient of thermal expansion t at the temperature Tlimit value of m as the higher temperature approaches the lower temperature (see Figure 1)NOTE
The definition of m and t assumes that the function giving the length variation in relation to the temperaturevariation is continuous. This excludes the use of the mean coefficient of linear thermal expansion m when the testspecimen experiences physical change due to change of phase, eg. recrystallisation or loss of water of hydration. The curve giving the length variation as a function of the temperature variation can be reported but the meancoefficient of thermal expansion should not be calculated for parts of the curve which are not continuous.SIST EN 13471:2002
