(Main)Geosynthetics - Installing and retrieving samples in the field for durability assessment (ISO 13437:2019)
General Information
- Abstract
This document specifies a method for the on-site installation and retrieval of geosynthetic samples, irrespective of the particular degradation mechanisms to which they are exposed.
The method is also appropriate to test for mechanical damage, much of which occurs during installation, and to provide an owner with information about the state of the geosynthetic product in their structure.

Overview
EN ISO 13437:2019 (ISO 13437:2019) - Geosynthetics - Installing and retrieving samples in the field for durability assessment - specifies a standardized method for on-site installation and retrieval of geosynthetic samples. The procedure applies to all geosynthetic products (not only geotextiles) and is intended to assess degradation mechanisms, installation damage and the in-service condition of geosynthetics used in civil and geotechnical structures.
Key topics and requirements
- Scope and principle
- Method for installing “testing samples” during construction and for retrieving “retrieval samples” from in-service installations.
- Compare properties of retrieved (used) material with control specimens taken from delivered material before installation.
- Sampling strategy
- Number and location of samples depend on structure size, environmental variability and consequences of potential failure.
- Typical retrieval schedule (unless otherwise agreed): first retrieval immediately after construction, second after 10 years, then every 20 years, with a final retrieval at end of service life.
- Preparation and handling
- Control specimens are taken at delivery, sized to match field samples and stored under controlled conditions (recommended storage ~0 °C to 20 °C and 50–65% RH).
- Specimens should follow ISO 9862 for sampling and preparation.
- Field retrieval procedure
- Excavation may begin mechanically but must be completed manually to avoid damage; soil/medium samples in contact with the geosynthetic must be collected for laboratory analysis.
- Photograph site, record visual condition (holes, tears, root penetration, water), label and document sample location and history.
- Define repair procedures for holes left in the geosynthetic; retrieval operations must consider impacts on structural stability and hydraulic function.
- Testing and reporting
- Test retrieved and control specimens as soon as practicable. Report identification, origin, installation date, exact location (drawing) and retrieval schedule.
Applications
- Durability assessment and lifecycle monitoring of liners, drainage layers, reinforcement membranes, and other geosynthetic components.
- Investigation of suspected installation damage or degradation (chemical, biological, mechanical).
- Quality assurance/quality control during construction and long-term asset management for embankments, landfills, retaining walls, canals and pavements.
Who should use this standard
- Geotechnical and civil engineers, contractors and site supervisors
- Owners/operators of infrastructure and environmental containment systems
- Materials testing laboratories and inspection agencies
- Design professionals specifying long-term performance of geosynthetics

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards
bodies (ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out
through ISO technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical
committee has been established has the right to be represented on that committee. International
organizations, governmental and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work.
ISO collaborates closely with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of
electrotechnical standardization.
The procedures used to develop this document and those intended for its further maintenance are
described in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 1. In particular, the different approval criteria needed for the
different types of ISO documents should be noted. This document was drafted in accordance with the
editorial rules of the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2 (see www .iso .org/directives).
Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this document may be the subject of
patent rights. ISO shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights. Details of
any patent rights identified during the development of the document will be in the Introduction and/or
on the ISO list of patent declarations received (see www .iso .org/patents).

For an explanation of the voluntary nature of standards, the meaning of ISO specific terms and
expressions related to conformity assessment, as well as information about ISO's adherence to the
World Trade Organization (WTO) principles in the Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) see www .iso

This document was prepared by the European Committee for Standardization (CEN) Technical
Committee CEN/TC 189, Geosynthetics, in collaboration with ISO Technical Committee TC 221,
Geosynthetics, in accordance with the Agreement on technical cooperation between ISO and CEN
(Vienna Agreement).
This second edition cancels and replaces the first edition (ISO 13437:1998), which has been technically
revised.
The main changes compared to the previous edition are as follows:
— The standard has been modified to cover all geosynthetics, rather than only geotextiles. The
specific references to individual polymer types have been removed to make the standard cover all
geosynthetic products.
Any feedback or questions on this document should be directed to the user’s national standards body. A
complete listing of these bodies can be found at www .iso .org/members .html.
