Overview
SIST EN 60335-2-48:2003/A11:2012 is a Slovenian adaptation of the European Standard for the safety of commercial electric grillers and toasters. Published and maintained by SIST (Slovenian Institute for Standardization), this standard is applicable to electrically operated grillers, toasters, salamanders, rotisseries, and similar appliances intended solely for commercial use. These appliances typically operate at voltages not exceeding 250 V for single-phase connections or 480 V for other configurations and are designed for environments such as restaurants, canteens, hospitals, bakeries, butcheries, and other commercial enterprises.
This standard specifies detailed safety requirements, with a primary focus on reducing the risk associated with electrical, mechanical, and hygienic hazards. It aligns with essential EU directives such as the Low Voltage Directive (2006/95/EC) and the Machinery Directive (2006/42/EC), ensuring a harmonized approach to appliance safety across Europe.
Key Topics
Scope and Applicability:
- Covers commercial electric grillers and toasters not intended for household use.
- Excludes appliances exclusively for industrial use, those for corrosive or explosive atmospheres, continuous mass-production machines, induction heating units, equipment for cosmetics or pharmaceuticals, and griddles/griddle grills.
Safety Requirements:
- Electrical safety in operation conditions, including overcurrent and leakage protection.
- Mechanical strength and endurance, especially for moving parts and guards.
- Clear visibility and accessibility of controls, avoiding accidental actuation.
- Safety during cleaning, maintenance, and operation, with guidance on disconnection during these activities.
Ergonomic and Hygiene Considerations:
- Compliance with ergonomic principles for user safety and convenience.
- Design and materials meeting hygiene standards for food-related operations, referencing EN ISO 14159.
User Instructions and Marking:
- Important warnings and safety instructions must be present on the appliance and associated documentation.
- Guidance on maintenance, accident response, and personal protective equipment usage.
- Explanation of symbols where used, based on international standards such as ISO 7000 and IEC 60417.
Applications
- Commercial Kitchens: Appliances such as rotary grillers, salamanders, and toasters are vital for efficient cooking in restaurants and catering operations.
- Institutional Use: Hospitals, schools, and canteens employ compliant grillers and toasters for safe large-scale food preparation.
- Food Service Enterprises: Bakeries, butcheries, and food courts utilize these appliances for both specialized and general grilling/toasting operations to ensure compliance with health and safety standards.
- Hospitality Sector: Hotels, cafeterias, and event venues rely on standardized commercial appliances to meet safety and performance expectations.
Using appliances conforming to SIST EN 60335-2-48:2003/A11:2012 helps commercial operators:
- Reduce liability related to electrical, hygiene, and operational hazards.
- Meet legal compliance requirements for equipment safety.
- Protect workers and end users through clear instructions and robust design.
- Align with EU directives to facilitate market access across Europe.
Related Standards
- EN 60335-1: General requirements for the safety of household and similar electrical appliances.
- EN 60335-2-38: Safety requirements for commercial electric griddles and griddle grills (excluded from the scope of this standard).
- EN ISO 14159: Hygiene requirements for the design of machinery, referenced for cleanliness standards.
- EN 614-1 and EN 614-2: Principles for ergonomic machine design and interaction with work tasks.
Adhering to SIST EN 60335-2-48:2003/A11:2012 ensures commercial electric grillers and toasters are safe, reliable, and compliant with both local and European regulations, supporting a safer workplace and improved operational efficiency in commercial food environments.
