Overview
SIST EN IEC 60691:2024/A1:2025 is the Slovenian implementation of EN IEC 60691:2023/A1:2024, an internationally harmonized amendment to the standard for thermal-links. Published by SIST, this standard sets the latest requirements and provides an updated application guide for thermal-links, which are safety devices designed to break the electrical circuit when a specific temperature is exceeded. The aim is to enhance safety and performance across a wide range of electrical and electronic equipment.
This amendment, aligned with IEC 60691:2023/AMD1:2024, introduces key updates to test methods, material requirements, and documentation, supporting consistent safety standards throughout the European market and internationally.
Keywords: thermal-links, overcurrent protection, safety devices, IEC 60691, fuses, electrical safety, standardization.
Key Topics
Test Procedures for Interrupting Current:
The amendment updates test current requirements for different types of thermal-link ratings (AC, DC, resistive, inductive, motor loads, etc.), ensuring uniform evaluation processes.Material and Construction Requirements:
Revisions clarify expectations for housing material ratings and insulation standards, including specifics about the use of polymeric materials and epoxy compounds. Requirements reference glow-wire ignition testing (GWIT) based on IEC 60695-2-13, ensuring fire resistance and material safety.Test Assembly and Instrumentation:
Guidance is included regarding the use of test fixture assemblies, monitoring configurations (e.g., thermocouple placement), and suitable sizes for test apparatus based on updated best practices.Consistency with International Standards:
The amendment references IEC and EN documentation, emphasizing uniform implementation in line with national and regional policies, facilitating easier market access and conformity assessment.
Applications
Thermal-links governed by this standard are critical components for overcurrent protection and thermal cut-off in various applications:
- Consumer Electronics:
Protection against overheating in appliances such as kettles, heaters, coffee makers, and washing machines. - Lighting Installations:
Safeguarding electric discharge lamps and luminaires from thermal damage. - Industrial Equipment:
Use in motors, transformers, and power supplies where reliable over-temperature protection is essential. - Automotive and Transportation:
Integration in vehicle electrical systems for circuit protection under fault conditions. - Medical Devices:
Ensuring patient and device safety in sensitive electronic medical equipment.
By adhering to SIST EN IEC 60691:2024/A1:2025, manufacturers ensure their products meet stringent thermal protection and electrical safety standards, supporting reliable performance and minimizing risk of fire or equipment failure.
Related Standards
To support comprehensive compliance and effective application, consider these related international standards:
- IEC 60691: Thermal-links - Requirements and application guide (main standard)
- IEC 60730-1: Automatic electrical controls for household and similar use - Part 1: General requirements (referenced for wire size and general test methods)
- IEC 60695-2-11 / IEC 60695-2-13: Tests for flammability of end-products (glow-wire test methods for insulating materials)
- EN IEC 60691: Harmonized European adoption of IEC 60691
In summary, SIST EN IEC 60691:2024/A1:2025 provides essential updated guidelines for the design, testing, and application of thermal-links used across modern electrical and electronic systems. Following this standard assures manufacturers, installers, and users of the highest levels of product safety and regulatory compliance within the global marketplace.
