Overview
SIST EN 4532:2009 specifies requirements for optical cables used in aerospace applications, focusing on single core cables with 200 µm/280 µm fibres and a 2.5 mm outer jacket. Developed by the Slovenian Institute for Standardization (SIST), this European standard addresses two main cable types:
- Type A: Jacketed fibre, intended for printed circuit board (PCB) inter-connection applications inside equipment.
- Type B: Single core cable, suitable for general airframe and equipment inter-connection in all aircraft locations except power plant compartments.
These optical fibre cables are particularly suitable for use in both military and civil aircraft, where reliable data transmission, durability, and high performance are essential.
Key Topics
Cable Types and Construction
- Type A (Jacketed fibre): Engineered for internal PCB inter-connection with tight, all-dielectric construction, offering excellent resistance to radiation and harsh environments.
- Type B (Single core cable): Designed for broader airframe and equipment connections, featuring a robust jacket, strength members, and tight buffer to ensure mechanical and optical integrity.
Performance Requirements
- Optical characteristics: Low attenuation and high optical isolation, ensuring minimal signal loss and protection from ambient light.
- Mechanical characteristics: Stringent bend radius requirements, tensile strength, and impact resistance to suit aerospace installation challenges.
- Environmental resilience: Operational temperature range from −60°C to +150°C, resistance to humidity, nuclear radiation, and exposure to chemicals commonly found in aircraft environments.
Testing and Quality Assurance
- Production acceptance tests: Routine tests verify core and cladding dimensions, proof testing, and attenuation.
- Qualification approval: Extensive mechanical, environmental, and flammability tests ensure long-term durability and safety.
Marking and Packaging
- Permanent identification: Part number, manufacturer, and year marked on the jacket at regular intervals, as per ISO 2574.
- Packaging requirements: Non-returnable reels, moisture protection, and detailed labelling to facilitate quality control and traceability.
Applications
SIST EN 4532:2009 standard cables are critical in the following areas:
- Military and civil aircraft: Used extensively in avionics networks, sensor interconnections, and communication systems where high-reliability fibre optic links are required.
- Equipment integration: Type A is ideal for high-density electronic assemblies, while Type B robustly supports broader, mission-critical airframe wiring.
- Harsh environments: Thanks to stringent specifications, these cables perform under extreme temperature fluctuations, pressure variations, humidity, and exposure to aircraft fluids.
- Long service life: Designed for a life span of over 25 years with minimal maintenance, reducing total cost of ownership for fleet operators.
Related Standards
For comprehensive implementation and testing, the following standards are referenced or related:
- EN 3733-001 / EN 3745-100 series: Define connector and fibre requirements for aerospace applications.
- IEC 60793 / IEC 60794: Cover general test methods and specification for optical fibres and cables.
- ISO 1817 / ISO 2574: Address effects of liquids and marking methods for cables.
- EN 2591-306 / EN 2591-316: Aerospace test methods for environmental resistance.
Implementing cables according to SIST EN 4532:2009 guarantees performance, reliability, and safety in demanding aerospace environments, supporting advanced fibre optic communication and system integration needs.
