This document specifies a method for the verification of the transfer capability of surface connectors, detonating cord relays and coupling accessories.
In case of coupling accessories, the document applies to non-electric detonators, electronic detonators and surface connectors where the shock tube is equipped with a coupling accessory and to shock tubes equipped with a coupling accessory.
This document does not apply to electric detonators, plain detonators, semi-finished detonators, and electronic initiation systems.

Le présent document ne s’applique pas aux détonateurs électriques, pyrotechniques et semi finis ni aux systèmes d’amorçage électroniques.

This document (EN 13763-25:2025) has been prepared by Technical Committee CEN/TC 321 “Explosives
for civil uses”, the secretariat of which is held by UNE.
This European Standard shall be given the status of a national standard, either by publication of an
identical text or by endorsement, at the latest by April 2026, and conflicting national standards shall be
withdrawn at the latest by April 2026.
Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this document may be the subject of
patent rights. CEN shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights.
This document supersedes EN 13763-25:2004.
EN 13763-25:2004:
a) the document title has been changed from “Detonators and relays — Part 25: Determination of
transfer capability of surface connectors, relays and coupling accessories” to “Detonators and
detonating cord relays — Part 25: Verification of transfer capability of detonating cord relays, surface
connectors and coupling accessories”;
b) the Introduction has been removed;
c) the Scope has been revised to clarify the covered and not covered explosives;
d) the normative references have been updated;
e) the former terminology entry 3.1 has been removed;
f) the Clause 4 “Principle” has been added;

1 Scope
This document specifies a method for the verification of the transfer capability of surface connectors,
detonating cord relays and coupling accessories.
In case of coupling accessories, the document applies to non-electric detonators, electronic detonators
and surface connectors where the shock tube is equipped with a coupling accessory and to shock tubes
equipped with a coupling accessory.
This document does not apply to electric detonators, plain detonators, semi-finished detonators, and
electronic initiation systems.

3 Terms and definitions
For the purposes of this document, the terms and definitions given in EN 13857-1:2025 apply.

4 Principle
Surface connectors, detonating cord relays and coupling accessories are used to transfer the shock wave
from one shock tube to one or more shock tubes, from a detonating cord to one or more detonating cords
or from a detonating cord to a shock tube.
Coupling accessories are not explosives but they are often sold as part of a non-electric detonators,
surface connectors or shock tubes.
For the verification of the transfer capability of a surface connector, a detonating cord relay or a coupling
accessory, the corresponding explosive article(s) is/are connected to a test piece. Either the test piece or
one explosive article connected to the test piece is then initiated and it is observed whether the test piece
successfully transfers the shock wave to the other connected explosive article(s).
5 Apparatus
5.1 Shock tubes, as specified in accordance with EN 13763-1:2025, 4.7.1.7, for the surface connector
to be tested.
5.2 Means of initiation, for the surface connector to be tested as specified in accordance with
EN 13763-1:2025, 4.7.1.4.
5.3 Detonating cords and a detonator, for testing detonating cord relay test pieces. The detonating
cords shall be the ones that may be used for the tested detonating cord relay as specified in accordance
with EN 13763-1:2025, 4.8.1.6. One detonating cord shall have a length ≥ 450 mm (donor cord) and the
other(s) shall have a length ≥ 350 mm (acceptor cords), plus the length needed for connecting the
detonating cords to the detonating cord relay. The detonator shall be as specified as means of initiation
for the detonating cord in accordance with EN 13630-1:2025, 4.1.4.
5.4 Detonating cord and a detonator, for testing coupling accessory test pieces. The detonating cord
shall be the one that shall be attached to the shock tube using the coupling accessory as specified in
accordance with EN 13763-1:2025, 4.3.1.4 (for non-electric detonators), 4.4.1.4 (for electronic
detonators), 4.7.1.4 (for surface connectors), or 4.9.1.4 (for shock tubes), as applicable. The detonating
cord shall have a length ≥ 450 mm plus the length needed for connecting the detonating cords to the
shock tube. The detonator shall be as specified as means of initiation for the detonating cord in
accordance with EN 13630-1:2025, 4.1.4.
5.5 Adhesive paper tape, capable of being used to cover the open ends of a shock tube.
5.6 Adhesive tape, made from paper, plastic or natural fibre.
5.7 Witness plate, made from aluminium designated EN AW-6082 in accordance with
EN 573-3:2019+A2:2023, Table 6, with a length of (50 ± 10) mm, a width of at least 50 mm and a
thickness of at least 10 mm.
5.8 Length measuring device, capable of being read to the nearest 1 mm for lengths up to 2 m.

6 Preparation of test samples and test pieces
Select 25 test pieces of the surface connector, the detonating cord relay or the coupling accessory to be
tested.
