Overview
SIST EN 50290-2-26:2002/A1:2007 is a European standard developed by the Slovenian Institute for Standardization (SIST), focusing on communication cables. Specifically, this standard details common design rules and construction requirements for halogen free flame retardant insulation compounds used in these cables. This amendment introduces an additional insulation compound grade for behavior at higher temperatures and updates technical criteria, supporting safety, performance, and compliance in cable manufacturing.
This standard is directly aligned with EN 50290-2-26:2002/A1:2007 and is relevant for industries emphasizing cable safety, fire resistance, and environmental considerations.
Key Topics
- Halogen Free Flame Retardant Compounds: The standard defines requirements for insulation materials in communication cables that do not contain halogens and can retard flames, reducing toxicity and smoke production during fire incidents.
- Mechanical and Electrical Properties: Specifications include maximum rated temperatures, tensile strength, elongation at break, volume resistivity, and dielectric properties for different compound types (cross-linked and thermoplastic insulation).
- Environmental and Safety Performance: Parameters such as shrinkage, behavior at low and high temperatures, corrosion, smoke opacity, and oxygen index ensure cables maintain their function in demanding conditions and contribute to building safety.
- Testing Methods: Cables must be tested per referenced international standards (EN 60811, IEC 60754, IEC 60250, etc.) to guarantee performance criteria are met.
Applications
Halogen free flame retardant insulation compounds specified in this standard are essential for:
- Telecommunication and Data Cables: Including both copper pairs and optical fiber cables.
- Coaxial Cables and Waveguides: Used in both commercial and industrial communication networks.
- Infrastructure Projects: Where low smoke and toxicity are required, such as tunnels, airports, railway stations, and public buildings.
- High-Safety Environments: Facilities that demand enhanced fire protection due to the presence of sensitive equipment or large numbers of people.
By conforming to SIST EN 50290-2-26:2002/A1:2007, cable manufacturers and specifiers ensure their products meet stringent European fire safety and environmental standards. This is crucial for public infrastructure, IT networks, and buildings regulated for reduced fire risk.
Related Standards
While SIST EN 50290-2-26:2002/A1:2007 provides comprehensive guidance on halogen free flame retardant insulation compounds, related standards provide further details on testing and material characteristics:
- EN 50290 Series: Broader requirements for communication cables, design, and construction.
- EN 60811 Series: Methods for evaluating insulation and sheath properties of cables.
- IEC 60754-2: Tests on gases evolved during combustion of cable materials.
- HD 405.3: For measuring the oxygen index relevant to fire retardant properties.
- IEC 60250: For determining dielectric constant and dissipation factor of cable insulations.
- IEC 60695-6: Guidelines for fire hazard testing of electric cables.
Practical Value
Implementing the design rules and construction guidelines from SIST EN 50290-2-26:2002/A1:2007 ensures safer, more reliable, and environmentally responsible cables in various communication applications. Following this standard supports compliance with European regulations, reduces liability, and enhances the sustainability profile of organizations relying on modern cable infrastructure.
