Overview

oSIST prEN 15004-10:2015 (Fixed firefighting systems - Gas extinguishing systems - Part 10: Physical properties and system design of gas extinguishing systems for IG-541 extinguishant) is an international standard published by SIST. The document provides requirements and guidelines for the safe and effective use of fixed gaseous fire-extinguishing systems employing IG-541. It details the physical properties, specifications, system design criteria, usage, and safety aspects for IG-541 extinguishant, focusing on applications at nominal pressures of 150 bar, 200 bar, and 300 bar at 15 °C.

The standard ensures proper fire protection using IG-541, an inert gas mixture, and guides professionals in designing reliable gas extinguishing systems for various hazards, ensuring safety, efficiency, and compliance.

Key Topics

Main areas covered by oSIST prEN 15004-10:2015 include:

  • Composition and Properties:
IG-541 is a colourless, odourless, electrically non-conductive gas composed of approximately 52% nitrogen, 40% argon, and 8% carbon dioxide. Its density closely matches that of air, and it is suitable for extinguishing a wide range of fires by reducing the oxygen concentration within an enclosure.

  • System Design Requirements:

    • Applicable for systems operating at 150 bar, 200 bar, or 300 bar at 15 °C.
    • Guidelines for calculating extinguishant quantities based on protected volume, design concentration, and expected temperatures.
    • Details on fill pressures and container specifications to ensure operational safety.
  • Safety Considerations:
Addresses potential hazards to personnel due to oxygen reduction and fire combustion products. Minimum safety requirements refer to EN 15004-1, with specific physiological thresholds for exposure.

  • Environmental Impact:
IG-541 is an environmentally friendly fire extinguishant with zero global warming potential (GWP) and zero ozone depletion potential (ODP).

Applications

IG-541-based gas extinguishing systems are utilized in various sectors where rapid, residue-free fire suppression is critical:

  • Data Centers, Server Rooms, and IT Environments
These systems minimize damage to sensitive electronic equipment by suppressing fire without leaving harmful residues.

  • Telecommunications and Control Rooms
Protects critical infrastructure with swift, non-conductive fire extinguishing action.

  • Archive and Record Storage
Preserves valuable documents and artifacts by maintaining a controlled atmosphere and preventing collateral fire or water damage.

  • Industrial and Manufacturing Facilities
Safeguards process areas, control systems, or paint and chemical storage with a robust, inert fire suppression solution.

  • Marine and Offshore Installations
Provides protection for engine rooms, machinery spaces, and equipment where gaseous suppression is preferred over water or foam systems.

Note: IG-541 systems are suitable for total flooding applications, effective in controlling Class A (surface), Class B (flammable liquids), and certain Class C (electrical) fires as specified in EN 15004-1.

Related Standards

For comprehensive system design and compliance, oSIST prEN 15004-10:2015 should be used in conjunction with other parts of EN 15004 and relevant fire protection standards:

  • EN 15004-1: General requirements for gaseous fire-extinguishing systems (including terms, definitions, and design principles).
  • Other EN 15004 Parts: Covering different extinguishants such as FK-5-1-12, HCFC Blend A, HFC 125, HFC 23, IG-01, IG-100, and IG-55.
  • EN 12094 Series: Components for gas extinguishing systems - used for selecting valves, control devices, and ancillary equipment.

Keywords: IG-541 fire suppression, gas extinguishing systems, fixed firefighting systems, inert gas extinguishant, system design, fire protection standard, environmental fire suppression, data center fire safety, European fire codes.

By adhering to oSIST prEN 15004-10:2015, fire protection professionals and facility managers can ensure high standards of fire safety, environmental responsibility, and regulatory compliance with IG-541 gas extinguishing systems.

3 Terms and definitions
For the purposes of this part of EN 15004, the terms and definitions given in EN 15004-1 apply.
4 Characteristics and uses
4.1 General
IG-541 is a colourless, odourless, electrically non-conductive gas with a density approximately the same as
that of air.
It is an inert gas mixture consisting nominally of 52 % nitrogen, 40 % argon and 8 % carbon dioxide. The
mixture specification for IG-541 (based on 8 % carbon dioxide with tolerance of ± 5 %) is as follows:
a) carbon dioxide percentage range 7,6 % to 8,4 %;
b) argon  percentage range 37,2 % to 42,8 %;
c) nitrogen  percentage range 48,8 % to 55,2 %.
Individual container or batch analysis is based on carbon dioxide measurement only.
Extinguishant IG-541 shall comply with the specification shown in Table 1.
The physical properties are shown in Table 2.
IG-541 extinguishes fires mainly by a reduction of oxygen concentration in the atmosphere of the hazard
enclosure.
