Overview

SIST EN 1034-7:2005+A1:2010 is a key European standard specifying safety requirements for the design and construction of chests used in paper making and finishing machines. Developed by the Slovenian Institute for Standardization (SIST), this standard ensures that chests involved in the processing, storing, and mixing of pulp in the paper industry operate safely and reliably. It must be applied in conjunction with EN 1034-1:2000+A1:2010, which covers common safety measures for paper machinery. Notably, this standard is not applicable to chemical tanks, storage tanks for additives, or vessels for wastewater, nor does it apply to equipment manufactured before its publication date.

Key Topics

  • Significant Hazard Identification
The standard addresses a complete list of significant hazards relevant to chests in the paper industry, including mechanical, electrical, and thermal risks, explosion hazards, noise, and ergonomic factors. The design process must be based on a documented risk assessment.

  • Safety Measures and Protective Devices

    • Fixed guards and enclosures for power transmission components
    • Secure and ergonomic covers or inspection hatches
    • Safeguarded working platforms and railings
    • Measures for electrical grounding and equipment safety
    • Explosion and overflow prevention systems
    • Emergency stop devices and procedures
  • Maintenance, Cleaning, and Access

    • Provisions for locking and safe isolation of equipment
    • Ventilation and removal of hazardous gases
    • Safe access (e.g., manholes) designed per ergonomic standards
    • Specific instructions for handling emergencies, including maintenance and repair activities
  • Verification and Documentation

    • Methods for verifying compliance through visual inspection, tests, and measurements
    • Requirement for safety information in user manuals
    • Information about noise emissions and the need for personal protective equipment

Applications

This standard is vital for:

  • Manufacturers of Paper Machinery
Ensuring new chest equipment meets EU safety directives and helps prevent workplace accidents during operation and maintenance.

  • Machine Designers and Engineers
Providing guidance for integrating effective safety features into new installations or retrofitting existing systems.

  • Plant Operators and Maintenance Personnel
Having clear instructions and safety precautions for daily operation, maintenance, and emergency response within pulp processing areas.

  • Regulatory Compliance
Supporting conformity with essential requirements of the EU Machinery Directive (2006/42/EC), facilitating CE marking and legal market access within Europe.
