Overview
SIST EN 61558-2-13:2010 specifies the particular safety requirements and testing procedures for auto transformers and power supply units incorporating auto transformers operating at supply voltages up to 1100 V. This standard is harmonized with IEC 61558-2-13:2009 and serves as a significant safety benchmark for manufacturers and users of transformers in various electrical and electronic installations. It covers both stationary and portable, single-phase or polyphase, dry-type auto transformers, including those with electronic circuits, and is intended for general application.
The standard is designed to ensure electrical, thermal, and mechanical safety aspects. It aligns with the latest updates in general transformer safety standards (IEC 61558-1:2005) and reflects recent industry practices and voltage requirements. As a group safety publication, it is widely adopted for national implementations across Europe and beyond.
Key Topics
Scope and Applicability
- Applies to auto transformers and power supply units with integrated auto transformers for general applications.
- Includes transformers with electronic circuits.
- Covers rated supply voltages up to 1100 V for both AC and ripple-free DC outputs.
Safety Requirements
- Electrical safety (including maximum output and core power limitations)
- Protection against electric shock, overheating, overload, and short circuits.
- Mechanical robustness, resistance to dust/moisture ingress, and insulation properties.
Testing Procedures
- Specification of tests for verifying compliance with electrical, thermal, mechanical, and insulation requirements.
- Marking and information requirements, including graphical symbols for different auto transformer types.
- Guidance for special environments and additional national or sectoral rules as needed.
Design Considerations
- Requirements for plug-connected auto transformers, safe wiring, earthing provisions, and clear identification of voltage, power, and current ratings.
- Directions for establishing appropriate creepage and clearance distances, especially for working voltages above 1000 V.
Applications
SIST EN 61558-2-13:2010 is crucial for a wide range of practical applications, including:
- Electrical Equipment Manufacturing: Ensures that auto transformers and integrated power supply units meet robust safety benchmarks before entering the market.
- Power Distribution Systems: Provides safety criteria for components within low-voltage electrical installations, helping to prevent electric shock and fire hazards.
- Industrial Automation: Used in control panels and machinery where voltage adaptation is needed without the requirement for isolated circuits.
- Technical Procurement: Informs purchasing and engineering decisions by specifying required safety standards for transformer-based equipment.
- Testing and Certification: Forms the basis for national and international certification of electrical transformers, ensuring legal compliance and product safety.
Because this standard is harmonized at the European level, compliance is often mandatory for products placed on the EU market and is recommended internationally for best-practice safety management.

1) The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) is a worldwide organization for standardization comprising
all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of IEC is to promote
international co-operation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronic fields. To
this end and in addition to other activities, IEC publishes International Standards, Technical Specifications,
Technical Reports, Publicly Available Specifications (PAS) and Guides (hereafter referred to as “IEC
Publication(s)”). Their preparation is entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested
in the subject dealt with may Participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and non-
governmental organizations liaising with the IEC also Participate in this preparation. IEC collaborates closely
with the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) in accordance with conditions determined by
agreement between the two organizations.
2) The formal decisions or agreements of IEC on technical matters express, as nearly as possible, an international
consensus of opinion on the relevant subjects since each technical committee has representation from all
interested IEC National Committees.
3) IEC Publications have the form of recommendations for international use and are accepted by IEC National
Committees in that sense. While all reasonable efforts are made to ensure that the technical content of IEC
Publications is accurate, IEC cannot be held responsible for the way in which they are used or for any
misinterpretation by any end user.
4) In order to promote international uniformity, IEC National Committees undertake to apply IEC Publications
transparently to the maximum extent possible in their national and regional publications. Any divergence
between any IEC Publication and the corresponding national or regional publication shall be clearly indicated in
the latter.
5) IEC provides no marking procedure to indicate its approval and cannot be rendered responsible for any
equipment declared to be in conformity with an IEC Publication.
