Overview
SIST EN ISO 9396:2001 specifies a standardized method for the determination of the gel time of phenolic resins at a given temperature using automatic apparatus. This method, harmonized with ISO 9396:1997, is a critical standard for industries and laboratories working with thermosetting plastics. The procedure is essential for quality control and development of phenolic resins, widely used in adhesives, coatings, electronics, and molding compounds.
By providing a reliable, repeatable procedure for measuring gel time, this standard helps manufacturers, quality control labs, and product developers ensure consistency, safety, and performance in phenolic resin-based products.
Key Topics
- Scope: The standard applies to liquid resols and solid resols with low melting points. It is not intended for powdered resins with extremely short gel times or those containing large amounts of volatile solvents.
- Gel Time Determination: Defines a process using automatic apparatus consisting of a reciprocating plunger in a test tube. The gel time is the moment when the sample's viscosity is such that the tube is lifted with the plunger.
- Test Temperatures: Measurements are performed at standard temperatures of 100°C, 130°C, or 150°C, as agreed upon between parties.
- Apparatus and Materials: Specifies the required instruments, including thermostatically controlled baths and precise measurement equipment, to ensure accuracy and repeatability.
- Accuracy and Reliability: The method includes guidance on repeatability (2-8% for same-operator, same-lab tests) and reproducibility (up to 20% across labs), highlighting the precision achievable with standardized conditions.
- Reporting Requirements: Detailed requirements for reporting test conditions, sample identification, mean gel time values, temperature, and equipment frequency are outlined for consistency and traceability.
Applications
Implementation of SIST EN ISO 9396:2001 brings practical benefits across several industries where thermosetting plastics are essential:
- Quality Control: Ensures batch-to-batch consistency in gel times for phenolic resin products, critical for product reliability in end-use applications.
- Product Development: Supports the optimization of cure kinetics in new resin formulations, enabling tailored performance characteristics for specific industrial applications.
- Supplier and Customer Agreements: Provides a reference method for resolving disputes about material specifications or performance claims related to gel time.
- Research and Testing Laboratories: Offers a standardized, repeatable process that facilitates inter-laboratory comparisons and collaboration.
- Compliance and Regulatory Documentation: Demonstrates conformance with internationally recognized methodology, facilitating market acceptance.
Common industries that benefit from this standard include the automotive, aerospace, electronics, construction, and furniture sectors, where phenolic resins are integral in laminates, insulation, adhesives, and coatings.
Related Standards
For comprehensive quality assurance and testing of plastics and phenolic resins, the following standards are often referenced alongside SIST EN ISO 9396:2001:
- ISO 9001 (Quality Management Systems): Supports overall process control and documentation.
- ISO 6270 (Paints and Varnishes - Determination of Resistance to Humidity): Often used in conjunction for resin coatings.
- ISO 3951 (Sampling Procedures): For establishing sampling plans in quality control testing.
- SIST EN ISO 899 (Plastics - Determination of Creep Behaviour): Relevant for further mechanical property evaluation.
Adopting SIST EN ISO 9396:2001 enhances confidence in product performance and helps organizations meet global expectations for quality in phenolic resin applications.

Foreword
IS0 (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide
federation of national standards bodies (IS0 member bodies). The work of
preparing International Standards is normally carried out through IS0
technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which
a technical committee has been established has the right to be represented
on that committee. International organizations, governmental and non-
governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. IS0
collaborates closely with the International Electrotechnical Commission
(IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
Draft International Standards adopted by the technical committees are
circulated to the member bodies for voting. Publication as an International
Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the member bodies casting
a vote.
International Standard IS0 9396 was prepared by Technical Committee
lSO/TC 61, Plastics, Subcommittee SC 12, Thermosetting materials.
This second edition cancels and replaces the first edition
(IS0 9396:1989), in which method A (which used a rotary stirrer) has been
deleted and a precision clause added.

Plastics - Phenolic resins - Determination of the gel time
of resols under specific conditions using automatic apparatus
l.Scope
This International Standard specifies a method for determining the gel time of
phenolic resins at a given temperature, using automatic apparatus under specified
conditions. The test temperatures are 100 “C, 130 “C and 150 “C.
The method specified employs a plunger driven to carry out a reciprocating vertical
motion. ,
This method applies to the following types of phenolic resin:
- liquid resols
- solid resols with low melting points
Powdered resins with a short gel time, such as mixtures of novolak and
hexamethylenetetramine, do not lend themselves to this type of determination. Such
resins crosslink as soon as fusion starts and become too viscous in the test tube to give
meaningful results. Resins containing large amounts of a solvent with a low boiling point
are especially unsuitable for this type of determination. With such resins, a boiling and
distillation process takes place as the resin hardens.
It might be of interest to determine the time taken for the resin to gel
