Overview
SIST EN IEC 62841-3-5:2022/A11:2022 is a Slovenian and European standard specifying the safety requirements for electric motor-operated transportable band saws. Issued by SIST and adopting EN IEC 62841-3-5:2022/A11:2022, the standard ensures harmonized safety criteria for transportable band saws, used in both professional and domestic environments. It modifies core clauses of the parent IEC 62841 series to address specific hazards, marking, operational instructions, and construction needs unique to transportable band saws with a mass up to 25 kg (for single-person handling) and up to 50 kg (for two-person handling). This standard also aligns with the essential health and safety requirements of EU Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC.
Key Topics
The standard covers the following crucial areas for electric motor-operated transportable band saws:
- Scope and Applicability: Applies to non-stationary, electrically operated band saws within specified mass limits; excludes larger stationary models.
- Safety Modifications: Enhances parent standard clauses to mitigate significant hazards such as mechanical injury, electrical shock, and unexpected re-starts after power interruption.
- Guarding and Construction: Details robust guarding for band wheels, drive mechanisms, and saw bands in non-cutting areas. Covers attachment requirements for access covers during maintenance.
- Marking & Instructions: Specifies mandatory marking, including accurate noise emission data, comparative use of those values, and operator safety warnings.
- Abnormal Operation & Restart Prevention: Addresses performance testing, failure scenarios, and prevents tool restart after mains supply interruptions unless the switch is reset.
- Noise and Vibration Measurement: Defines required methods for recording noise and vibration emissions for transparent comparison and compliance.
- Alignment with EU Legislation: Includes informative annexes mapping standard clauses to the essential requirements of the Machinery Directive.
Applications
This standard is essential for:
- Manufacturers of electric transportable band saws who must prove conformity to safety requirements within the European market, especially to meet CE marking obligations.
- Importers and Distributors seeking clarity on legal safety standards for product placement within the EU/EFTA.
- Regulators and Assessors verifying compliance of tools with relevant directives and ensuring machinery safety for end users.
- Occupational Safety Teams establishing safe use protocols for power tools in construction, woodworking, metalworking, and related trades.
- Industrial and Professional Users who need guidance on hazard controls, safe tool design, maintenance, and operational safety to minimize workplace risks.
- Testing and Certification Labs applying harmonized methods for mechanical and electrical hazard assessment, and noise/vibration measurement, ensuring products reach required safety levels.
Related Standards
For comprehensive compliance and broader context, consider these related standards:
- EN 62841-1:2015: General requirements for electric motor-operated hand-held tools, transportable tools, and lawn and garden machinery.
- EN 1807-1:2013: Safety of woodworking machines - Band sawing machines - Table band saws and band re-saws (for stationary saws outside the scope of 62841-3-5).
- EN IEC 62841 series: Series covering a wide range of specific power tool types and safety aspects.
- EN ISO 12100: General principles for machinery risk assessment and risk reduction.
- EU Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC: Regulatory framework referenced for legal conformity in the EU market.
By adhering to SIST EN IEC 62841-3-5:2022/A11:2022, stakeholders ensure transportable band saws meet stringent European safety standards, supporting product reliability, operator safety, and regulatory compliance.

The Part 3-5 supplements or modifies the corresponding clauses in EN 62841-1:2015, so as to convert it into
the European Standard: Particular requirements for transportable band saws.
Where a particular subclause of Part 1 is not mentioned in Part 3-5, that subclause applies as far as relevant.
When this document states “addition”, “modification” or “replacement”, the relevant text in Part 1 is adapted
accordingly.
The following print types are used:

1 Modification to Clause 1, “Scope”
Add the following to the existing Clause 1:
“This document applies to band saws having a mass of:
— maximum 25 kg for tools capable of being lifted by hand by one person;
— maximum 50 kg for tools capable of being lifted by hand by two persons.
This document does not apply to stationary band saws intended to cut wood and similar materials.
NOTE Z101 EN 1807-1:2013 gives requirements for stationary band saws and band saws with a mass greater than
indicated above.
This document covers all significant hazards, hazardous situations or hazardous events relevant for tools
covered by this document.
NOTE Z102 Essential requirements not mentioned in Table ZZ.1 are deemed to be not applicable, because the
corresponding hazards are either not relevant for machines covered by this document or do not require specific action by
the designer.”
2 Modification to Clause 8, “Marking and instructions”
Add the following after 8.14.2 b):
“8.14.2 Za) Replacement of items 3, 4 and 5 with the following:
3) The following information:
— that the declared noise emission value(s) have been measured in accordance with a standard test
method and may be used for comparing one tool with another;
— that the declared noise emission value(s) may also be used in a preliminary assessment of exposure.
4) A warning:
— that the noise emissions during actual use of the power tool can differ from the declared values
depending on the ways in which the tool is used especially what kind of workpiece is processed; and
— of the need to identify safety measures to protect the operator that are based on an estimation of
exposure in the a
