Aluminium and aluminium alloys - Scrap - Part 16: Scrap consisting of skimmings, drosses, spills and metallics

This part of this European Standard specifies characteristics, chemical composition and metal yield of aluminium scrap consisting of skimmings, drosses and spills. It also applies to the metallic obtained by dry processing of drosses and skimmings. Full lots of dross fines with particle size smaller than 0,8 mm, or loft of drosses with a metal yield less than 30% are not within the scope of this Standard.

Overview

SIST EN 13920-16:2004 is a European standard addressing the quality and characteristics of aluminium and aluminium alloy scrap, specifically focusing on materials such as skimmings, drosses, spills, and metallics obtained from dry processing. Developed by the Slovenian Institute for Standardization (SIST) and aligned with EN 13920-16:2003, this standard establishes a uniform approach for the classification, chemical composition, and metal yield of these types of aluminium scrap. Its primary aim is to support the recycling sector by ensuring consistency, reliability, and transparency in scrap quality throughout the supply chain.

Key Topics

  • Scope and Applicability
    • Identifies types of acceptable aluminium scrap: skimmings, drosses, spills, and metallic fractions from dry processes.
    • Excludes dross fines of particle size smaller than 0.8 mm and dross lots with a metal yield below 30%.
  • Characteristics and Quality Requirements
    • Scrap must be free from moisture, refractories, stones, plastics, wood, and other foreign materials.
    • Particles should not exceed 600 mm in any dimension.
  • Chemical Composition
    • Determined by mutual agreement between supplier and purchaser, fostering flexibility and customization.
  • Metal Yield
    • Minimum required metal yield is 30%, evaluated as per EN 13920-1 procedures.
  • Classification and Non-Conformity
    • Emphasizes a structured approach for sampling, testing, classification, and dispute resolution, referencing EN 13920-1 guidelines.

Applications

The implementation of SIST EN 13920-16:2004 benefits a range of industries and stakeholders:

  • Metal Recyclers and Smelters
    • Ensures efficient sourcing and processing of aluminium scrap, reducing contamination risks and optimizing recovery rates.
    • Facilitates clear communication of quality expectations and ordering details between suppliers and purchasers.
  • Foundries and Remelters
    • Supports the production of high-quality cast aluminium products by standardizing raw material input.
  • Sustainability and Environmental Management
    • Promotes responsible recycling practices by setting minimum quality thresholds, thus reducing landfill and maximizing resource recovery.
  • Quality Assurance Professionals
    • Assists in the formulation and audit of procurement specifications, minimizing disputes during material acceptance.

Related Standards

For comprehensive scrap management and aluminium recycling quality, the following related standards should be referenced:

  • EN 13920-1:2003 – General requirements, sampling, and tests for aluminium and aluminium alloy scrap.
  • prEN 12258-3:2000 – Terms and definitions related to aluminium scrap.
  • Other parts of the EN 13920 series, covering various types of aluminium scrap such as:
    • Part 2: Unalloyed aluminium scrap
    • Part 7: Scrap consisting of castings
    • Part 10: Used aluminium beverage cans
    • Part 12 & 13: Turnings from single or mixed alloys

These references provide comprehensive guidance for various categories of aluminium scrap and ensure harmonization across the European aluminium recycling industry.

By following SIST EN 13920-16:2004, stakeholders involved in aluminium recycling and remelting operations can improve process efficiency, maintain high product standards, and contribute positively to the circular economy through effective aluminium scrap management.
