Aerospace series - Paints and varnishes - Corrosion resistant chromate-free two component cold curing primer - Part 001: Basic requirements

This standard specifies the basic requirements for a two component, cold curing, chromate-free epoxy or polyurethane, corrosion resistant primer which can be used with or without a finish for aerospace applications.
The properties specified in this standard are obtained on defined aluminium alloy test pieces prepared in accordance with EN 3837, process A and ISO 3270. The ability of the material to be used for a specific application (e.g. alternative substrate, alternative primer, specific drying conditions etc.) shall be determined by supplementary tests to confirm that the requirements of this standard are met.

Overview

SIST EN 2436-001:2009 establishes the basic requirements for two-component, chromate-free, cold curing primers used in aerospace applications. These primers, based on either epoxy or polyurethane chemistry, provide corrosion resistance while meeting stringent environmental and safety standards by eliminating chromate compounds. The standard is essential for manufacturers and suppliers of aerospace coatings, ensuring consistency, compatibility, and performance of surface protection systems across the aerospace industry.

Key Topics

Chromate-Free Primer Requirements

  • Two-component system: Comprised of a base and an activator, which are mixed before use.
  • Cold curing: Designed for curing at ambient temperatures, supporting flexible application environments.
  • Epoxy or polyurethane base: Two chemical classes (Type A: Epoxy, Type B: Polyurethane) to suit various project needs.
  • Corrosion resistance: Specifically formulated to offer reliable protection for aluminum alloys often used in aerospace.
  • No chromate compounds: Offers compliance with modern environmental and safety regulations.
  • Film characteristics: Ensures an even, defect-free finish with specified dry film thickness.

Testing and Quality Assurance

  • Batch release and qualification testing: Defined protocols to ensure uniform quality across production batches.
  • Surface preparation standards: Utilization of EN 3837 and ISO 3270 for preparing and conditioning test pieces, typically of aluminum alloy.
  • Performance on defined substrates: Properties verified on specified aluminum alloys, with provisions for supplementary testing on alternative substrates or under varying application conditions.
  • Physical, chemical, and mechanical testing: Includes evaluation of film integrity, adhesion, pot life, viscosity, and resistance to fluids and environmental factors.

Applications

Aerospace Industry

  • Aircraft manufacturing and maintenance: Used as a protective primer for structural parts, exterior skins, and components, either as a standalone layer or beneath topcoat finishes.
  • Compliance with environmental directives: Chromate-free primers are critical for meeting REACH and other global hazardous substance restrictions, supporting sustainable aviation practices.
  • Compatibility and versatility: Suitable for both original equipment manufacturers (OEM) and maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) operators, covering a wide range of application scenarios including alternative drying and substrate conditions (pending supplementary testing).

Surface Protection

  • Corrosion protection: Extends the operational life and reliability of metal aerospace components exposed to harsh environmental conditions.
  • Flexibility in use: Can be tailored for various aircraft types, including commercial, military, and general aviation, depending on specific needs and testing outcomes.

Related Standards

To ensure effective and compliant implementation, SIST EN 2436-001:2009 references several related standards commonly used in the aerospace coatings sector:

  • EN 3837: Surface preparation of aluminum alloys for testing paints and varnishes.
  • EN 3840: Technical specification and requirements for paints and coatings in aerospace applications.
  • ISO 3270: Conditioning and testing temperatures and humidities for paints and varnishes.
  • EN 2334: Chromic-sulphuric acid pickle for aluminum alloy preparation.
  • EN 2379: Fluids for assessment of non-metallic materials used in aerospace.
  • EN 4385: Organization and classification of EN non-metallic materials standards.

These standards together provide a robust framework for aerospace coating materials, ensuring safety, durability, and compliance throughout the industry.

By adhering to SIST EN 2436-001:2009, companies involved in the aerospace sector benefit from improved product reliability, regulatory compliance, and environmental safety, making this standard a key reference for aerospace coatings and surface protection systems.
