Overview
SIST EN IEC 63129:2020/A1:2026 is an international standard that specifies the methodology for determining the inrush current characteristics of lighting products. Developed by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) and adopted as a European and Slovenian standard, this amendment (A1:2026) reflects the latest technical updates to the original IEC 63129:2020. The standard plays a critical role in the safe and efficient design of lighting systems by providing guidance on measuring and managing the inrush currents that occur during the initial switching of lighting devices.
Inrush currents, especially their peak value and pulse duration, can greatly affect the selection and compatibility of associated components such as switches and circuit breakers. This standard aids manufacturers, system designers, installers, and specifiers in ensuring lighting installations are robust, reliable, and compliant with safety regulations.
Key Topics
- Inrush Current Measurement: Establishes procedures for determining the peak inrush current and pulse duration in lighting products. Correct measurement is essential for accurate component selection.
- Component Compatibility: Offers clear guidelines for matching lighting device inrush characteristics with the withstand capabilities of switches and circuit breakers. This reduces the risk of nuisance tripping, contact erosion, or even device failure.
- Application Guidelines: Discusses practical considerations for specifying and installing lighting equipment, emphasizing the role of inrush currents in the sizing of protection devices within electrical installations.
- Documentation Consistency: Recommends that manufacturers of lighting products, switches, and circuit breakers provide harmonized inrush current information in their technical documentation to aid users in correct system design.
Applications
The practical value of SIST EN IEC 63129:2020/A1:2026 extends across multiple roles in the lighting and electrical industry:
- Manufacturers: Can provide standardized inrush current data for their lighting products, supporting accurate application and system integration.
- Installers and System Designers: Use the inrush current measurements and diagrams outlined in the standard to select and dimension switches and circuit breakers, helping prevent unintentional tripping and premature wear.
- Specifiers: Reference the standard to ensure lighting systems are compatible with existing infrastructure and adhere to the latest safety requirements.
- Building and Facility Managers: Benefit from reliable information when upgrading lighting systems, which helps avoid costly downtime due to circuit breaker trips or switch failures.
- Compliance: Supports adherence to IEC and European Union electrical installation standards, ensuring nationwide and cross-border compatibility in the EU and beyond.
Related Standards
For comprehensive application and compliance, the following related standards are commonly referenced in conjunction with SIST EN IEC 63129:2020/A1:2026:
- IEC 60669-2-1:2021: Switches for household and similar fixed electrical installations - Particular requirements for electronic control devices.
- IEC 63129:2020: The base standard, detailing the methodology for measuring inrush currents in lighting products.
- EN IEC 63129:2020/A1:2025: The European-adopted version reflecting the same amendment, ensuring harmonization across the EU.
- EN Standards for Circuit Breakers and Protection Devices: For precise component selection based on inrush current withstand capabilities.
By following the guidance in this standard, stakeholders in the lighting industry can ensure safety, performance, and regulatory compliance when dealing with inrush currents in lighting installations. This update demonstrates ongoing commitment to harmonized practices and the evolving needs of modern lighting applications.

AMENDMENT 1
FOREWORD
1) The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) is a worldwide organization for standardization comprising
all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of IEC is to promote international
co-operation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronic fields. To this end and
in addition to other activities, IEC publishes International Standards, Technical Specifications, Technical Reports,
Publicly Available Specifications (PAS) and Guides (hereafter referred to as "IEC Publication(s)"). Their
preparation is entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested in the subject dealt with
may participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and non-governmental organizations liaising
with the IEC also participate in this preparation. IEC collaborates closely with the International Organization for
Standardization (ISO) in accordance with conditions determined by agreement between the two organizations.
2) The formal decisions or agreements of IEC on technical matters express, as nearly as possible, an international
consensus of opinion on the relevant subjects since each technical committee has representation from all
interested IEC National Committees.
3) IEC Publications have the form of recommendations for international use and are accepted by IEC National
Committees in that sense. While all reasonable efforts are made to ensure that the technical content of IEC
Publications is accurate, IEC cannot be held responsible for the way in which they are used or for any
misinterpretation by any end user.
4) In order to promote international uniformity, IEC National Committees undertake to apply IEC Publications
transparently to the maximum extent possible in their national and regional publications. Any divergence between
any IEC Publication and the corresponding national or regional publication shall be clearly indicated in the latter.
5) IEC itself does not provide any attestation of conformity. Independent certification bodies provide conformity
assessment services and, in some areas, access to IEC marks of conformity. IEC is not responsible for any
services carried out by independent certification bodies.
6) All users should ensure that they have the latest edition of this publication.
7) No liability shall attach to IEC or its directors, employees, servants or agents including individual experts and
members of its technical committees and IEC National Committees for any personal injury, property damage or
other damage of any nature whatsoever, whether direct or indirect, or for costs (including legal fees) and
expenses arising out of the publication, use of, or reliance upon, this IEC Publication or any other IEC
Publications.
8) Attention is drawn to the Normative references cited in this publication. Use of the referenced publications is
indispensable for the correct application of this pu
