Overview
SIST EN 60512-14-5:2006 specifies a standardized test method for assessing the sealing effectiveness of connectors for electronic equipment, focusing on resistance to water ingress during immersion at low air pressure in a salt solution. Developed and published by the Slovenski inštitut za standardizacijo (SIST), this European standard is aligned with IEC 60512-14-5:2006, supporting harmonization and quality assurance in connector testing across industries.
The test method described in this standard is particularly suitable for mated connector assemblies but can also be applied to similar connectors as specified in accompanying detail specifications.
Key Topics
- Sealing Test for Connectors: The standard details procedures to assess the performance of electronic connectors against environmental conditions, specifically water ingress under low-pressure immersion.
- Low Air Pressure Environment: Devices are subjected to immersion in a 5% (by weight) salt solution and exposed to low pressure (2 kPa) to simulate harsh operating environments.
- Applicability: Primarily intended for mated connector assemblies but adaptable for similar electromechanical components used in electronic equipment.
- Measurement and Inspection:
- Visual examination before and after testing to check for defects
- Insulation resistance and voltage proof tests to ensure continued electrical performance
- Documentation of any solution ingress or dielectric breakdown
Applications
SIST EN 60512-14-5:2006 is widely applicable to industries where connector reliability is critical, including:
- Telecommunications Equipment: Ensures connectors maintain electrical integrity and resist water ingress in challenging field conditions.
- Industrial Automation: Suitable for factory environments where exposure to harsh elements is possible.
- Automotive Electronics: Addresses quality demands on connectors used in vehicles, especially those exposed to weather or cleaning processes.
- Aerospace and Defense: Assesses connectors in systems where environmental sealing and resistance to pressure differentials are vital.
- Marine and Offshore Equipment: Protects sensitive interconnection points against saline and humid environments.
By establishing a repeatable test method, the standard promotes connector quality and reliability, reducing risks of failure caused by moisture or contamination in equipment.
Related Standards
This standard is part of a series for testing electronic connectors and should be used in conjunction with:
- EN 60512-1-1: General examination and visual inspection standards for electronic equipment connectors.
- EN 60512-3-1: Insulation resistance tests for electronic equipment connectors.
- EN 60512-4-1: Voltage stress (voltage proof) tests to ensure electrical integrity under stress.
- Other Parts of EN 60512-14: Including sealing tests for fine air leakage (Part 14-2), waterproofing (Part 14-4), interfacial sealing (Part 14-6), and impacting water (Part 14-7).
These related standards provide a comprehensive approach to connector testing, supporting manufacturers, engineers, and compliance professionals in achieving high performance, safety, and environmental resistance for electronic equipment connectors.

FOREWORD
1) The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) is a worldwide organization for standardization comprising
all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of IEC is to promote
international co-operation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronic fields. To
this end and in addition to other activities, IEC publishes International Standards, Technical Specifications,
Technical Reports, Publicly Available Specifications (PAS) and Guides (hereafter referred to as “IEC
Publication(s)”). Their preparation is entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested
in the subject dealt with may participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and non-
governmental organizations liaising with the IEC also participate in this preparation. IEC collaborates closely
with the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) in accordance with conditions determined by
agreement between the two organizations.
2) The formal decisions or agreements of IEC on technical matters express, as nearly as possible, an international
consensus of opinion on the relevant subjects since each technical committee has representation from all
interested IEC National Committees.
3) IEC Publications have the form of recommendations for international use and are accepted by IEC National
Committees in that sense. While all reasonable efforts are made to ensure that the technical content of IEC
Publications is accurate, IEC cannot be held responsible for the way in which they are used
