Overview
SIST EN ISO 17871:2020/kFprA2:2026 is an amendment to the international standard ISO 17871:2020, focusing on quick-release cylinder valves used in gas cylinders. This document specifies requirements and type testing procedures for these valves, ensuring their functionality, safety, and performance, particularly when used as closures on gas cylinders in various industrial settings. This amendment aligns the requirements with updates to other related international standards and addresses specific needs for applications such as fire-fighting systems and residual pressure valves.
Key Topics
- Scope of Amendment: The amendment clarifies that the document addresses only the quick-release function as a closure, while other integrated functions are governed by separate standards.
- Updated References: Integration of the latest versions of related standards such as ISO 10297:2024 and ISO 17879:2026, ensuring the most current safety and performance benchmarks are referenced.
- Compliance and Testing: Quick-release cylinder valves must meet the requirements of ISO 10297, ISO 17879, or ISO 23826, except where the amendment stipulates alternative or additional requirements.
- Leak Tightness and Endurance: Clear guidelines are given on external and internal leak tightness requirements, leak rates, endurance cycles, and conditions under which certain tests may be omitted based on application.
- Hydraulic Pressure Testing: Amendments to pressure test protocols, including terminology updates and calculations for hydraulic and burst pressure relevant for specific uses, especially in fire-fighting systems.
- Marking and Identification: Enhanced requirements for durable, legible marking of cylinder valves to ensure traceability and compliance with both the standard and regulatory or customer specifications.
Applications
Quick-release cylinder valves manufactured and tested according to SIST EN ISO 17871:2020/kFprA2:2026 play a vital role in a variety of gas cylinder applications, ensuring safety and reliability in:
- Industrial Gas Supply: Applications requiring rapid cylinder discharge, such as in welding, manufacturing, and gas distribution systems.
- Fire-fighting and Safety Systems: Valves used for fixed fire-fighting systems must meet specific additional requirements, referencing ISO 16003 or relevant regional standards, to ensure safe operation during emergencies.
- Residual Pressure Valves (RPVs): For valves integrating RPV functionality, this amendment refers to ISO 15996 for specialist requirements that enhance operational safety and performance.
- Pressurized Systems: Valves utilized in pressure regulators, transport, and storage of gas cylinders under variable environmental conditions, ensuring performance across a range of temperatures and in both stationary and portable applications.
Related Standards
Alignment with related international standards ensures comprehensive safety and interoperability throughout the gas cylinder industry:

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards
bodies (ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through
ISO technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee
has been established has the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations,
governmental and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely
with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
The procedures used to develop this document and those intended for its further maintenance are described
in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 1. In particular, the different approval criteria needed for the different types
of ISO documents should be noted. This document was drafted in accordance with the editorial rules of the
ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2 (see www.iso.org/directives).

AMENDMENT 2
1 Scope, paragraph after NOTE 2
Replace the paragraph with the following paragraph:
“This document only covers the function of a quick-release cylinder valve as a closure. Other functions that
are possibly integrated in the valve can be covered by other standards. Such standards do however not
constitute requirements according to this document.”
1 Scope, new NOTE 3
Add the following Note at the end of clause 3:
“NOTE 3 Certain specific requirements for quick-release cylinder valves for fixed fire-fighting systems
in addition to those that are given in this document are specified in ISO 16003 and at a regional level, e.g. in
EN 12094–4. Certain specific requirements for residual pressure valves (RPV), in addition to those that are
given in this document, are given in ISO 15996.”
2 Reference to ISO 10297 and ISO 17879
Substitute “ISO 10297:2014+Amd1:2017” with “ISO 10297:2024” and “ISO 17879:2017” with “ISO 17879:2026”.
4.1 First paragraph
Substitute the first paragraph with the following paragraph:
“Quick-release cylinder valves shall comply with all requirements of ISO 10297, ISO 17879 or ISO 23826
(except Clause 8), as applicable, unless this document expressly allows differing requirements or stipulates
additional requirements.”
4.1 Last paragraph
Substitute “ISO 10297:2014+Amd1:2017, 5.2” with “ISO 10297:2024, 5.2” and “ISO 17879:2017, 5.2” with
