Overview
SIST EN ISO 18473-2:2018 is a key European standard that specifies the requirements and testing methods for nanoscale titanium dioxide (TiO₂) in powder form, specifically tailored for sunscreen applications. Developed within the ISO 18473 series on functional pigments and extenders for special applications, this part addresses surface-modified TiO₂, ensuring its suitability for effective ultraviolet (UV) protection in personal care products.
Nanoscale titanium dioxide has become a preferred inorganic UV filter in modern sunscreen formulations due to its superior ability to attenuate UV radiation while maintaining transparency on the skin. This standard enables clear communication and agreement on the product’s quality parameters among manufacturers, suppliers, and end users.
Key Topics
Scope and Classification
- Specifies requirements for nanoscale titanium dioxide powders, including powder form and surface modification.
- Details TiO₂ classification by crystal type, such as anatase-type or rutile-type, determined via X-ray examination.
Essential Requirements
- Median primary particle size: ≤100 nm (to be agreed upon by interested parties).
- Specific surface area: ≥15 m²/g, if applicable.
- Mass fraction of titanium dioxide: ≥70% by weight.
- Crystal structure (anatase or rutile) as the main constituent.
- Limitations on hazardous elements (such as Hg, Pb, As) as required by legislation.
- Moisture content and loss on ignition: to be agreed between parties.
Test Methods
- Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) or dynamic light scattering (DLS) for particle sizing.
- BET method for specific surface area (ISO 9277).
- Mass fraction and purity testing (ISO 591-1).
- Reference to additional standardized testing and sampling methods.
Marking and Reporting
- Requirements for clear and comprehensive labeling, including manufacturer and product identifiers.
- Standardized formats for test reports, ensuring all necessary data and compliance results are included.
Applications
Sunscreen Formulation
- Provides standardized benchmarks for using nanoscale titanium dioxide as a UV filter, ensuring consistent quality and safety in sun protection products.
Quality Assurance
- Supports both buyers and suppliers in verifying product suitability, facilitating transparent technical transfers, and reducing misunderstandings.
- Essential for regulatory compliance and product labeling accuracy.
Industrial Trade
- Establishes a common language for international sales and trade of sunscreen-grade titanium dioxide powders.
- Assists formulators and manufacturers in meeting legislative and consumer safety requirements.
Related Standards
- ISO 591-1: Titanium dioxide pigments for paints - methods of test.
- ISO 787-2: General methods for pigments and extenders - determination of volatile matter.
- ISO 2859: Sampling procedures for inspection by attributes.
- ISO 3262-1: Extenders for paints - introduction and general test methods.
- ISO 9277: Determination of specific surface area by gas adsorption (BET method).
Practical Value
Adhering to SIST EN ISO 18473-2:2018 ensures that nanoscale titanium dioxide intended for sunscreen applications meets stringent quality criteria, enabling safe, reliable, and effective skin protection against harmful UV radiation. The standard promotes uniformity in technical specifications, streamlines trade, and supports innovation in sun care products by providing clarity on material requirements and performance expectations.
