Overview

SIST EN ISO 9092:2026 - Nonwovens Vocabulary is an internationally recognized standard developed by ISO and adopted as a European and Slovenian national standard. The document provides authoritative definitions for the term "nonwovens" and related key terminology, supporting consistent communication and clear differentiation between nonwovens and other textile or sheet materials such as woven textiles, knitted fabrics, films, and paper products.

This standard is of significant value for manufacturers, suppliers, designers, and end-users within the textile and nonwovens industries, as well as for regulatory bodies and testing laboratories. By offering precise, harmonized language, SIST EN ISO 9092:2026 helps ensure clarity and reduces ambiguity in technical documents, product specifications, procurement, and regulatory compliance.

Key Topics

  • Nonwoven definition
Describes nonwovens as engineered, primarily planar fibrous assemblies given structural integrity by physical and/or chemical bonding-explicitly excluding weaving, knitting, and paper-making.

  • Fibrous Assemblies
Establishes what constitutes a fibrous assembly, including arrangements of natural or manufactured fibers, filaments, or chopped yarns.

  • Bonding Processes
Details bonding mechanisms for structural integrity in nonwovens, such as frictional forces (entanglement) and adhesive forces (with or without binders).

  • Distinctions from Other Materials
Clarifies the differences between nonwovens, paper, films, knitted and woven textiles, ensuring proper classification. For example, it distinguishes wet-laid nonwovens from paper based on the predominant bonding mechanism.

  • Auxiliary Terminology
    Introduces specific terms such as:

    • Wet-laid process (not paper-making)
    • Film-derived nonwovens
    • Stitchbonded materials
    • Wadding (high-loft nonwovens)
    • Nonwoven composites
  • Index and References
The standard includes an index for easy navigation and references foundational vocabulary documents such as ISO 4046-3 and NWSP 001.

Applications

SIST EN ISO 9092:2026 is used across multiple points of the value chain in the nonwovens industry:

  • Product Development and Specification
Assists engineers, designers, and product managers in specifying, developing, and marketing nonwoven products by providing precise terminology.

  • Procurement and Supply Chain
Ensures buyers and suppliers adopt a shared understanding of product types, bonding methods, and structural characteristics.

  • Quality Assurance and Testing
Supports laboratories in classifying and testing nonwoven materials according to globally accepted definitions, facilitating accurate reporting and compliance.

  • Regulatory Compliance and International Trade
Provides regulatory agencies and customs officials with clear, standardized terms, streamlining certification and international trade of nonwovens.

  • Education and Training
Serves as an essential reference for technical training, research, and educational purposes in textile science and materials engineering.

Related Standards

  • ISO 4046-3: Paper, board, pulps and related terms-Vocabulary-Part 3: Paper-making terminology
Provides comprehensive terminology for paper and related industries, useful for differentiating paper from nonwovens.

  • NWSP 001: Standard Terminology Relating to the Nonwoven Industry
    Aligns nonwoven sector-specific language globally.

  • Other textile vocabulary standards
Additional ISO and CEN textile standards may complement the terminology provided in SIST EN ISO 9092:2026 for seamless communication in textile technology.
