Overview
SIST EN ISO 80000-9:2019/A1:2025 is an essential European and international standard that addresses quantities and units specifically within the fields of physical chemistry and molecular physics. Published by the Slovenian Institute for Standardization (SIST) and aligned with ISO and CEN, this amendment (Amendment 1) updates and clarifies the definitions, symbols, and usage of quantities and units relevant to these scientific disciplines. The standard enhances consistency in communication, reporting, and documentation by ensuring the same system of units is applied across research and industry.
Key Topics
- Harmonization of Quantities and Units: Ensures that physical chemistry and molecular physics practitioners use standardized units, as defined by the International System of Units (SI).
- Updated Normative References: The amendment brings in updated references, particularly to the 9th edition of "The International System of Units (SI, 2019)," ensuring alignment with the latest global standards.
- Clear Terminology: Offers precise definitions, names, and symbols for quantities frequently encountered in these fields, facilitating unambiguous interpretation and data exchange.
- International Applicability: Endorsed by ISO and CEN, and adopted by national standards bodies across Europe and worldwide, ensuring broad recognition and application.
Applications
The correct use of standardized quantities and units is crucial in various contexts, including:
- Academic Research: Supports accurate reporting and reproducibility of scientific findings in physical chemistry and molecular physics by providing universally accepted terminology and measurement units.
- Industrial Laboratories: Enhances interoperability and data comparison for laboratories dealing with chemical processes, spectrometry, molecular analysis, and similar activities.
- Scientific Publications and Data Exchange: Facilitates global collaboration by standardizing units in articles, datasets, and technical documentation.
- Education and Training: Used in curriculum development and textbooks to ensure emerging scientists and professionals are proficient in accepted units and terminology.
- International Collaboration: Eases the transfer and interpretation of technical data between researchers, institutions, and organizations across borders.
Related Standards
For further consistency and comprehensive knowledge in the domain of quantities and units, the following related standards are important:
- ISO 80000 Series: A multi-part international standard covering quantities and units across various scientific disciplines, including mechanics, thermodynamics, electromagnetism, and more.
- The International System of Units (SI): The globally accepted basis for measuring and reporting quantities in science and engineering, regularly maintained by the BIPM (Bureau International des Poids et Mesures).
- EN ISO 80000-9:2019: The underlying European standard, which this amendment updates, dealing specifically with physical chemistry and molecular physics units.
- National Adoptions: Various national standards bodies (such as DIN, AFNOR, and BSI) implement and reference these international standards for local regulatory compliance.
SIST EN ISO 80000-9:2019/A1:2025 serves as a foundational document for accuracy, reliability, and global harmonization in the measurement and reporting processes inherent to physical chemistry and molecular physics. By endorsing precise units and terminology, it advances scientific integrity, industry best practices, and international cooperation.
