Overview

SIST EN ISO 9173-2:2010 (Dentistry - Extraction forceps - Part 2: Designation) establishes an international system for the designation of dental extraction forceps. Published by the Slovenski inštitut za standardizacijo (SIST), this standard aligns with EN ISO 9173-2:2010 and ISO 9173-2:2010, ensuring consistency across European and global dental practices. The document is essential for dental professionals, manufacturers, and distributors, facilitating a clear and standardized method to identify and specify extraction forceps by both pattern and intended clinical use.

Key Topics

  • Designation System:
The standard lays out a systematic approach to the designation of dental extraction forceps. It combines the pattern number (manufacturer's model/brand number) with a functional designation, which is based on the forceps' clinical application in dentistry.

  • Functional Designation:
This part introduces a code system using digits to indicate:

    • The jaw (maxillary, mandibular, or universal)
    • The sextant or areas of the dental arch (anterior, posterior, etc.)
    • Any special use (such as pediatric, root, or tooth splitting forceps)
  • Marking and Labelling Requirements:
The standard requires clear and permanent marking of the pattern number on each extraction forceps. It also recommends including the standardized designation on the instrument and its packaging for clear identification throughout the supply chain.

  • Catalogue Entries:
Consistent designation must be used in printed and electronic catalogues, improving product selection and procurement processes for dental clinics and distributors.

Applications

SIST EN ISO 9173-2:2010 provides practical value in several key areas:

  • Clinical Use:
Ensures dentists and assistants can select the appropriate extraction forceps for specific teeth and procedures with confidence, reducing errors during treatment planning.

  • Procurement and Inventory Management:
With standardized designation, dental clinics and purchasing departments can easily order the correct instruments, streamlining inventory management and reducing the risk of supplying incorrect tools.

  • Manufacturing and Distribution:
Manufacturers benefit from a harmonized labelling and catalogue system, aiding communication with clients and distributors globally. Compliance with ISO 9173-2 ensures products meet recognized international standards, enhancing marketability.

  • Education and Training:
Dental schools and training institutions use the standardized designation to teach instrument identification, improving consistency and safety in clinical practice.

Related Standards

  • ISO 9173-1:
Dentistry - Extraction forceps - Part 1: General requirements and test methods
Specifies the general requirements and testing procedures for extraction forceps, complementing the designation system.

  • ISO 3950:
Dentistry - Designation system for teeth and areas of the oral cavity
Provides the coding system for referencing teeth and oral regions, utilized within the functional designation codes.

  • ISO 1942:
    Dentistry - Vocabulary
Offers definitions for terms used in dental instruments and procedures.

  • ISO 3166-1:
Codes for the representation of names of countries and their subdivisions
Used for specifying country codes in pattern number references.

Conclusion

SIST EN ISO 9173-2:2010 is a critical standard supporting the standardized designation of dental extraction forceps. By promoting clear, consistent identification and labelling, it ensures effective communication across dental professionals, enhances purchasing efficiency, and upholds global quality standards in dental equipment. Compliance with this standard is essential for manufacturers, suppliers, and dental practitioners aiming for reliability and safety in dental tool selection and use.

ISO 9173-2:2010(E)
Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards bodies
(ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through ISO
technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee has been
established has the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations, governmental and
non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely with the
International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
International Standards are drafted in accordance with the rules given in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2.
The main task of technical committees is to prepare International Standards. Draft International Standards
adopted by the technical committees are circulated to the member bodies for voting. Publication as an
International Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the member bodies casting a vote.
