Specifications for particular types of winding wires - Part 22: Polyester or polyesterimide enamelled round copper wire overcoated with polyamide, class 180 (IEC 60317-22:2004/A1:2009)

Amandma A1:2010 je dodatek k standardu SIST EN 60317-22:2005
This part of IEC 60317 specifies the requirements of enamelled round copper winding wire of class 180 with a dual coating. The underlying coating is based on polyester or polyesterimide resin, which may be modified providing it retains the chemical identity of the original resin and meets all specified wire requirements. The superimposed coating is based on polyamide resin. NOTE A modified resin is a resin that has undergone a chemical change, or contains one or more additives to enhance certain performance or application characteristics. Class 180 is a thermal class that requires a minimum temperature index of 180 and a heat shock temperature of at least 200 °C. The temperature in degrees Celsius corresponding to the temperature index is not necessarily that at which it is recommended that the wire be operated and this will depend on many factors, including the type of equipment involved.
The range of nominal conductor diameters covered by this standard is as follows:
– grade 1: 0,050 mm up to and including 3,150 mm;
– grade 2: 0,050 mm up to and including 5,000 mm;
– grade 3: 0,250 mm up to and including 1,600 mm.
The nominal conductor diameters are specified in Clause 4 of IEC 60317-0-1.

- stopnja 1: od 0,050 mm do vključno 3,150 mm;
- stopnja 2: od 0,050 mm do vključno 5,000 mm;
- stopnja 3: 0,250 mm do vključno 1,600 mm.
Nominalne premere prevodnikov določa klavzula 4 IEC 60317-0-1.

Overview

SIST EN 60317-22:2005/A1:2010 specifies the requirements for polyester or polyesterimide enamelled round copper winding wires, overcoated with polyamide, and classified as class 180. This standard, aligned with IEC 60317-22:2004/A1:2009, applies to winding wires characterized by a dual coating system - an essential feature for high-performance electrotechnical applications such as motors, transformers, and coils.

The amendment A1:2010 updates and clarifies certain aspects of the base standard to ensure harmonization with international requirements and industry practices across Europe. It outlines conductor size ranges and describes key performance criteria relevant to temperature classification, chemical makeup, and functional coating integrity.

Key Topics

  • Winding Wire Structure
    Enamelled copper wires feature a two-layered coating. The base (or primary) coating is polyester or polyesterimide, possibly modified to enhance performance while maintaining the original resin's chemical identity. The outer coating is polyamide, providing additional insulation and mechanical strength.

  • Class 180 Thermal Rating
    Wires under this standard belong to thermal class 180, meaning they are suited for applications requiring a minimum temperature index of 180°C and a heat shock temperature of at least 200°C. This classification ensures reliability under demanding electrical thermal conditions.

  • Conductor Diameter Ranges

    • Grade 1: 0.050 mm to 3.150 mm
    • Grade 2: 0.050 mm to 5.000 mm
    • Grade 3: 0.250 mm to 1.600 mm
      These specifications ensure the standard covers a wide array of applications demanding various mechanical and electrical properties.
  • Quality Tests and Compliance
    The standard references essential quality benchmarks, such as adherence to IEC 60317-0-1 for specific tests (for example, the pin hole test), and assures that modified resins used in wire insulation meet all stipulated requirements.

Applications

Enamelled round copper wires with polyamide overcoating are vital components in industries that demand optimal electrical insulation, durability, and thermal stability:

  • Electric motors and generators: The high thermal rating makes these wires suitable for compact, high-efficiency electric drives
  • Power and distribution transformers: Ensures reliable operation under thermal stress and electrical load variations
  • Relays, solenoids, and inductive devices: Offers enhanced insulation and mechanical integrity for precise coil winding
  • Automotive and industrial controls: Used where superior resistance to mechanical abrasion and elevated temperatures is essential
  • Consumer electronics: Applies in components requiring miniaturization with high insulation reliability

The polyamide overcoat delivers improved chemical resistance, flexibility, and abrasion protection, vital for automated winding processes and long-term operational life.

Related Standards

Organizational alignment and cross-referencing are key for consistent international quality. Standards related to SIST EN 60317-22:2005/A1:2010 include:

  • IEC 60317-0-1: General requirements for all types of winding wires, including nominal conductor diameter specifications and standard testing procedures
  • IEC 60317 Series: Covers various types of enamelled winding wires, differentiated by conductor material, insulation system, and thermal class
  • EN 60317-22:2004/A1:2010: Harmonized European adoption of the IEC standard, ensuring widespread acceptance across regulatory environments
  • ICS 29.060.10: The International Classification for Standards category for wires, cables, and accessories

By adhering to these standards, manufacturers and users ensure the performance, safety, and interoperability of winding wire products in electrical and electronic assemblies worldwide.
