SIST EN 1047-2:2009/kFprA1:2012
(Amendment)Secure storage units - Classification and methods of test for resistance to fire - Part 2: Data rooms and data container
Secure storage units - Classification and methods of test for resistance to fire - Part 2: Data rooms and data container
Data rooms and data containers are fire protection security products whose purpose is to protect temperature and humidity sensitive data media and hardware systems from the effects of fire. These fire resistance products do not provide any defined protection against burglary.
Based on these objectives, the CEN/TC 263 Working Group WG2 Fire Resistance unanimously noted at its meeting on 8 March 2012 that the requirement for a certified high security lock according to EN 1300 for data rooms and data containers suggests protection that is not provided and does not reflect the requirements of the market.
For the reasons explained above, WG2 unanimously recommended deletion of the requirements for a certified high security lock according to EN 1300 without replacement from EN 1047-2:2009. In the interest of the market, this change in this European Standard shall be implemented very soon via an Amendment to EN 1047-2:2009. The necessary decision shall be taken in a 3 months shortened UAP. The necessary application shall be filed with the CEN/TC 263 via DIN.
The draft for Amendment A1 to EN 1047-2:2009 shall be presented to the CEN/TC 263 together with the application for changes in this European Standard.

Overview
SIST EN 1047-2:2009/kFprA1:2012 is a European standard focused on the fire resistance classifications and testing methods of secure storage units-specifically, data rooms and data containers. These secure storage solutions play a crucial role in protecting temperature and humidity-sensitive data media and hardware systems from fire damage. This standard, developed by CEN/TC 263, outlines the requirements for construction, classification, and performance testing to ensure reliable fire protection.
It is important to note that data rooms and data containers certified to this standard do not provide defined protection against burglary; their primary function is fire resistance. The recent amendment (A1) removes any reference or requirement for high-security locks as per EN 1300, aligning the standard with actual market needs and clarifying that burglary resistance is not a feature of these products.
Key Topics
- Scope of Protection: Focuses solely on protecting data storage facilities and hardware systems from the effects of fire, not from unauthorized access or theft.
- Classification System: Details types and classes for fire-resistance, including exposure times and allowable temperature and humidity increases during fire events.
- Testing Methodology: Specifies fire endurance and impact testing procedures to ensure data rooms and containers withstand fire exposure while maintaining internal environment limitations.
- Amendment A1: Officially deletes the certified high security lock (EN 1300) requirement, emphasizing that data rooms and containers are not expected to deter burglary.
- Types of Data Media Protected: Includes all kinds of data media and hardware systems except those affected at temperatures below 75°C or humidity above 85%.
Applications
SIST EN 1047-2:2009/kFprA1:2012 is vital across multiple sectors where protecting sensitive digital and physical records from fire is essential:
- Data Centers & IT Facilities: Protects servers, backup tapes, and other critical IT infrastructure from fire damage, ensuring business continuity.
- Government and Archives: Safeguards official documents, records, and archives that require secure, fire-resistant storage environments.
- Financial Institutions: Shields confidential financial data and transactional records vital for operations and compliance.
- Healthcare Facilities: Preserves patient records and sensitive healthcare data stored on electronic media or in hardware systems.
- Libraries and Museums: Secures digital archives, rare media, and hardware used in storing and managing cultural assets.
Organizations deploying data rooms or data containers can confidently manage fire risk and safeguard irreplaceable information assets by referencing this standard.
Related Standards
- EN 1047-1: Secure storage units - Classification and methods of test for resistance to fire - Part 1: Data cabinets and diskette inserts.
- EN 1363-1:1999: Fire resistance tests - General requirements, referenced for test procedures and fire integrity criteria.
- EN 1047-2:2009: The base version of this standard prior to amendment A1, which included the now-deleted lock requirements.
- EN 1300: High-security locks classification (no longer relevant under this standard after Amendment A1).
Practical Value
Utilizing SIST EN 1047-2:2009/kFprA1:2012 ensures that organizations select fire protection storage solutions tested for reliable fire resistance under realistic, rigorous conditions. This helps reduce the risk of data loss due to catastrophic fire events, supports compliance and insurance objectives, and aligns infrastructure investments with best practices in fire protection for critical data storage.
For organizations seeking reliable protection for data rooms and data containers, adherence to this standard is a key step in the broader framework of information security and disaster recovery planning.
