Metallic materials - Tube - Flattening test (ISO 8492:2013)
ISO 8492:2013 specifies a method for determining the ability of metallic tubes of circular cross-section to undergo plastic deformation by flattening. It may also be used to reveal the defects in the tubes.
ISO 8492:2013 is applicable to tubes having an outside diameter no greater than 600 mm and a thickness no greater than 15 % of the outside diameter. The range of the outside diameter or thickness, for which this International Standard is applicable, may be more exactly specified in the relevant product standard.

Overview
SIST EN ISO 8492:2014 establishes the standardized procedure for performing the flattening test on metallic tubes, specifically those with a circular cross-section. This international standard is identical to ISO 8492:2013 and is adopted by the Slovenian Institute for Standardization (SIST). The flattening test is designed to determine a tube’s capability to withstand plastic deformation without cracking and to reveal any defects present in the material. It applies to metallic tubes with an outside diameter up to 600 mm and a wall thickness not exceeding 15% of the tube’s outside diameter.
Key Topics
Scope of Application
- Metallic tubes of circular cross-section
- Maximum outside diameter: 600 mm
- Maximum wall thickness: 15% of the outside diameter
Test Procedure
- Flattening the end or a section of the tube between two rigid, parallel platens
- The tube is compressed perpendicular to its longitudinal axis until a specified distance between platens is reached
- Test is generally performed at ambient temperatures between 10 °C and 35 °C
Test Equipment
- Machines with rigid platens longer and wider than the test piece
- The platens must provide even pressure along the tube segment
Assessment and Reporting
- Evaluation for visible cracks or deformation
- Test report should include reference to ISO 8492, specimen identification, relevant dimensions, test result, and position of weld if applicable
Revealing Defects
- The test can expose defects such as cracks or discontinuities in the tube material
Applications
The flattening test for metallic tubes is essential for:
- Quality Control in Manufacturing:
Applied in the production of steel and other metallic tubes to verify material ductility and integrity before further processing or assembly. - Compliance with Product Standards:
Acts as a part of the assessment procedures required by many product-specific and sector-specific standards. - Detection of Surface Defects:
A proven method for identifying cracks, lamination, and material inconsistencies that may compromise tube performance in service. - Research and Development:
Supports the development of new tube alloys and manufacturing processes by providing critical data on deformation characteristics.
Industries that rely heavily on standardized mechanical testing of tubes include automotive, construction, energy and power generation, and manufacturing of pressure equipment.
Related Standards
When implementing or referencing SIST EN ISO 8492:2014, consider these associated standards for a comprehensive approach to testing metallic materials:
- ISO 6892 – Metallic materials - Tensile testing
- ISO 8491 – Metallic materials - Tube - Drift-expanding test
- ISO 7438 – Metallic materials - Bend test
- EN 10233 – Metallic tubes - Flattening test
- EN 10210/10219 – Hot/Cold formed structural hollow sections
These documents provide additional methodologies for evaluating mechanical properties and structural reliability, ensuring robust quality control and compliance across industries.
By following SIST EN ISO 8492:2014, organizations can ensure their metallic tubes meet recognized international benchmarks for ductility and defect resistance, supporting product reliability and safety in a wide range of applications.
