Overview

SIST EN 61628-1:1998 specifies definitions, designations, and general requirements for corrugated pressboard and presspaper intended for electrical purposes. These insulating materials are indispensable in electrical engineering, particularly for high-voltage equipment, ensuring reliable electrical insulation and mechanical support. Developed by the Slovenski inštitut za standardizacijo (SIST) and aligned with IEC 61628-1:1997, this standard offers harmonized guidelines for manufacturers, suppliers, and users in the electrical insulation industry.

Key Topics

  • Definitions: The standard clarifies essential terminology related to corrugated pressboard and presspaper, ensuring consistent communication across the industry. It includes descriptions of corrugation types (sine, angular, symmetrical, non-symmetrical) and their geometric characteristics.
  • Designations: A systematic method for designating corrugated pressboard and presspaper, using a combination of base material type, thickness, and corrugation code (e.g., B3.1/1/SS for symmetrical sine corrugation).
  • General Requirements: Outlines basic material properties, including:
    • Composition: Materials must be manufactured from compliant pressboard or presspaper without additives, formed by mechanical pressure, heat, moisture, or combinations.
    • Packaging: Requirements for protective packaging to guarantee the material’s integrity during handling and transport.
    • Marking: Materials must be clearly marked with neutral, oil-resistant, and non-polluting identifiers to ensure traceability and compatibility with electrical oils.

Applications

Corrugated pressboard and presspaper designed under this standard are primarily used in electrical insulation systems. Typical applications include:

  • Transformers: Used as barriers and spacers to separate conducting components and enhance dielectric strength.
  • Switchgear and Control Gear: Applied as insulation layers within high-voltage switchgear assemblies.
  • Cables and Bushings: Serve as insulation wraps and structural supports in power transmission networks.
  • Motors and Generators: Employed in slot liners and other insulation structures.

Their use supports safety, reliable performance, and durability in harsh electrical environments, contributing to the efficient operation of electrical power systems.

Related Standards

To ensure comprehensive compliance and compatibility, refer to the following related standards:

  • IEC 60641-1: Specification for pressboard and presspaper for electrical purposes – Definitions and general requirements.
  • IEC 60641-2: Specification for pressboard and presspaper for electrical purposes – Methods of test.
  • IEC 60641-3-1: Specification for pressboard for electrical purposes – Requirements for different pressboard types.
  • IEC 60641-3-2: Specification for presspaper for electrical purposes – Requirements for various presspaper types.

SIST EN 61628-1:1998 functions as part one of the broader IEC 61628 series, providing the foundation for testing methods and detailed material specifications in subsequent parts.

Practical Value

Implementing SIST EN 61628-1:1998 drives the standardization of insulating materials for electrical applications, reducing supply chain discrepancies and improving compatibility across manufacturers. Organizations benefit from:

  • Enhanced safety and performance in electrical systems
  • Clear identification and specification when sourcing materials
  • Compliance with international best practices, boosting market acceptance

This standard proves vital for manufacturers, suppliers, quality assurance teams, and designers working with electrical insulation materials, supporting high standards in reliability and operational efficiency.
