INTRODUCTION
The objective of the third Edition of this document is to review and update the connector
specifications containing product requirements.
The objective of its first edition was to update the quality assessment procedures of the
connector specifications to the state-of-the-art industrial procedures at that time. At its time of
publication, all the connector detail specifications dealt with by subcommittee 48B of the
International Electrotechnical Commission were built as described in Figure 1 with 5 major
chapters.
The most significant out-of-date procedures were related to the lot-by-lot tests with different
inspection levels and acceptance quality level, and to the periodic tests with permitted number
of defects.
To update the document to reflect more modern practices, it was then felt necessary to
introduce the capability and the technology approval, together with the basic design parameters
of statistical process control, as a feedback system to have a continuous control of the quality
during the various steps of manufacture.
It was also then felt appropriate to split the documentation structure, at that moment used, into
two separate structures of documents which, in the day-to-day use of specifications, could
satisfy most users, see Figure 2.
This offered the user the option to acquire products with and without certification. It is obvious
that the industry needs to get separate information on dimensions, performance requirements
and basic design parameters.
The documentation system has been then split into two parts:
Product requirements
Quality assessment requirements
The structure for the connector detail product specification contains characteristics,
dimensions, performance requirements (electrical, environmental, mechanical) and test
schedules. The relevant document is this document, together with the applicable sectional
specification.
The structure for the connector quality assessment specification contains the requirements to
obtain qualification approval (QA) for a given performance level (per environmental category),
capability approval (CA) per family of connectors or technology approval (TA), comprising all
relevant technologies for connector production.
Capability approval or technology approval combined with statistical process control
parameters were intended to replace lot-by-lot and periodic tests. The relevant document is:
IEC 62197-1:2006, Connectors for electrical and electronic equipment - Quality assessment
requirements - Part 1: Generic specification
To specify a fully certifiable product, a combination of the two structures had to be selected by
the user, keeping in mind that in the statistical process control, key characteristics would have
to be agreed between manufacturer and user.
A generic product specification with a 4-level structure consists of a generic, a sectional, a
blank detail and a detail specification.
IEC CDV 61076-1 © IEC 2026
Besides this generic specification, the currently availabe sectional specifications are the
following:
IEC 61076-2, Connectors for electrical and electronic equipment - Product requirements - Part
2: Circular connectors - Sectional specification
IEC 61076-3, Connectors for electrical and electronic equipment - Product requirements - Part
3: Rectangular connectors - Sectional specification
IEC 61076-4, Connectors with assessed quality, for use in d.c., low-frequency analogue and in
digital high-speed data applications - Part 4: Sectional specification - Printed board connectors
IEC 61076-7, Connectors for use in d.c., low-frequency analogue and digital high speed data
applications - Part 7: Cable outlet accessories with assessed quality, including qualification and
capability approval - Sectional specifiation
NOTE 1 Sectional specifications Part 5 and Part 6 have been in the meantime withdrawn.
NOTE 2 Titles of Part 2 and Part 3 are already as in their forthcoming new editions. Titles of Part 4 and Part 7 will
be aligned to the agreed new format that extends use of connectors also to electrical equipent, in line with the
revision of scope of subcommittee 48B occurred some years ago.
Underneath this second level, the available documents of the third level are the blank detail
specifications as follows.
IEC 61076-2-001:2011, Connectors for electronic equipment - Product requirements - Part 2-
001: Circular connectors - Blank detail specification
IEC 61076-3-001:2008, Connectors for electronic equipment - Product requirements - Part 3-
001: Rectangular connectors - Blank detail specification
IEC 61076-4-001:1996, Connectors with assessed quality, for use in d.c., low-
frequencyanalogue and in digital high-speed data applications - Part 4:Printed board connectors
- Section 001: Blank detail specification
IEC 61076-7-001:2004, Connectors for electronic equipment - Part 7-001: Cable outlet
accessories - Blank detail specification
NOTE 3 Titles of all these sectional specifications will be aligned to the new format at any new edition.
From this, it can be concluded that two generic specifications were issued, one document for
the product aspects (this one) and a second one for the quality aspects.
The sectional specifications are issued at the product level per family of connectors, for example
printed board connectors, circular connectors, rectangular connectors, etc.
At the quality assessment level, IEC 62197-1:2006 deals with qualification approval in Clause
B.2, capability approval in Clause B.3 and technology approval in Clause B.4.

number of contacts
number of contacts (or ways) that a connector owns, including the protective and/or functional
earth contact(s), if any
Note 1 to entry: A connector for removable contacts is characterized by its number of contact positions (seats): its
number of contacts (ways) may be lower than the number of contact positions (seats).
Note 2 to entry: The same number of contacts does not grant the same electrical interface: the geometry of said
contacts may be different while their number is the same.
3.8

Note 1 to entry: Two connectors of the same gender may have the same overall dimensions but different mounting
dimensions and/or different interface dimensions
3.9
interface dimensions
set of dimensions required to fully describe the connector's mating interface, belonging to both
the connector insert and to the relevant electric contacts
Note 1 to entry: Interface dimensions enable the proper functioning of a mated set of connectors according to the
relevant product detail specification or manufacturer's detail specification.
Note 2 to entry: Two connectors with same interface dimensions have the same number of contact seats (or
positions), whereas they may not show the same number of contacts (ways).

dimensions related to the wiring of the connector, i.e. to its number and type of contacts (ways)
Note 1 to entry: Two connectors of the same gender with the same electrical wiring-related dimensions have the
same number of contacts (ways) or contact positions (seats), the same dimensions of these contacts or contact
positions, the same overall dimensions, the same interface dimensions, and if they are printed board connectors, the
same mounting dimensions.
3.12
electrical, mechanical and climatic performances
levels of electrical, mechanical and climatic performance assigned to a connector in the relevant
product detail specification or manufacturer's detail specification, therein verified through
dedicated groups of tests
Note 1 to entry: The electrical performance includes signal integrity.
4 Technical information
4.1 System of levels
4.1.1 General
Clauses 4.1.2 and 4.1.3.2 provide information about performance levels and compatibility
levels, respectively.
The term "level" is used in the following with different meanings:
– performance level (see 4.1.2);
– compatibility level (see 4.1.3.2)
and these should clearly be distinguished. All details of the levels and their combinations shall
be specified in the detail product specification. A detail product specification may contain more
than one performance level and compatibility level.
4.1.2 Performance levels
If appropriate, the detail product specification shall contain information about the different
performance levels.
The term "performance level" reflects the grouping of the climatic and mechanical stresses at
which a component is tested, as well as the long-term stability of electrical characteristics
defining its electrical performance, which includes, as applicable, signal integrity.
IEC CDV 61076-1 © IEC 2026
If different levels are defined in a detail product specification, they shall be numbered, where
the lowest number (1) usually indicates the highest performance.
They consist in:
– operating environment (climatic conditions), see 4.1.2.1;
– electrical characteristics, see 4.1.2.2;
– mechanical characteristics, see 4.1.2.3;
In addition to those, further characteristics that are mandatorily specified in detail product
specifications are:
– test schedule;
– severities of test conditions;
– end-of-test conditions (acceptance criteria);
– different (closer) tolerances on characteristics;
– different severities for environmental testing.
4.1.2.1 Operating environment
This covers definition and values for the following parameters:
– temperature and temperature ranges (see 4.3);
– humidity and damp heat, steady state (see 4.3);
– IP degree of protection according to IEC 60529, as applicable (see 7.4);
– low air pressure (see 7.4);
– fluid immersion and resistance (see 7.4);
– corrosion by industrial atmosphere (concentration of polluting gasses or salt spray
endurance) (see 7.4).
4.1.2.2 Electrical characteristics
These cover definition and values of the following parameters (see 7.1):
– clearance and creepage distances (associated to the rated insulation voltage(s), the rated
impulse voltage(s) and the assigned pollution degree, see IEC 60664-1:2020 or IEC TR
63040, and IEC 61984:2008 as applicable, see also 4.4);
– voltage proof (which derives from the above);
– connection technologies, type of conductor(s) and range of sizes;
NOTE 1 A connector can be foreseen for multiple connection technologies, either solderless per IEC 60352 (all
parts), solder type, or screw-type per IEC 60999-1:1999.
NOTE 2 Type of conductor(s) refers to the nature of material (e.g. copper or copper alloy, aluminium, or other
conductive material) and its class, as defined in IEC 60228: class 1 (rigid), class 2 (stranded), class 5 (flexible), class
6 (more flexible than class 5).
– current-carrying capacity (see 4.5);
– mating and unmating under load, if applicable (e.g., CBC per IEC 61984:2008);
– contact resistance and shield resistance (if any);
– insulation resistance;
– transmission characteristics (signal integrity) (see 7.2).
4.1.2.3 Mechanical characteristics
These cover definition and values of the following parameters (see 7.3 and 7.4):
IEC CDV 61076-1 © IEC 2026
– mechanical operation;
– engaging and separating forces;
– functionality of contact retaining systems;
– capability for keying and/or polarisation;
– axial static load;
– mechanical shock and vibration.
4.1.3 Compatibility
4.1.3.1 General
Compatibility comprises specification of intermountability (see Clause B.2), intermateability
(see Clause B.3) and/or interchangeability (see Clause B.6), as well as of interoperability (see
Clause B.5) and backward compatibility (see Clause B.7), where applicable, as detailed in
4.1.3.2 and in Annex B (normative), to guarantee compliance with requirements of mated
connector pairs, when the individual connector halves are supplied by different sources.
Examples of such parameters are:
– contact design;
– shape and dimension of mechanical interface;
– material specifications;
– retention information of loose-part or removable contacts;
– locking device;
– mounting information.
NOTE Additional compatibility requirements may be defined in the product detail specification to fulfil compliance
with automatic mounting, assembling and solder/solderless termination tools.
4.1.3.2 Compatibility levels
4.1.3.2.1 General
As a function of the standardisation degree, four levels characterize the compatibility of
connectors from different sources. These levels are defined in 4.1.3.2.2 to 4.1.3.2.5 and shall,
when appropriate, be indicated in the detail product specification of connectors.
NOTE If connectors of different compatibility levels are mated, the lower level prevails.
4.1.3.2.2 Level 1 - Intermountable
This level standardizes only overall dimensions and mounting dimensions on printed board or
panel cut-out and cable termination assembly. Connectors from different sources are not
necessarily intermateable.
Information required in a detail specification in order to satisfy this level is:
For printed board connectors:
– printed board layout;
– board distances and orientation (parallel or perpendicular);
– panel cut-out and location, if applicable.
For free cable connector, cable termination assembly characteristics shall be specified.
IEC CDV 61076-1 © IEC 2026
4.1.3.2.3 Level 2 - Intermateable
This level standardizes only dimensions of electrical and mechanical interfaces.
Electrical, mechanical and climatic performances of connectors from different sources, when
mated, are not fully guaranteed.
4.1.3.2.4 Level 3 - Intermateable and intermountable
This level standardizes mounting dimensions, electrical and mechanical interface and overall
dimensions.
Electrical, mechanical and climatic performances of connectors, from different sources, when
mated, are not fully guaranteed.
4.1.3.2.5 Level 4 - Interchangeable
This level standardizes all the elements guaranteeing compliance of the electrical, mechanical
and climatic performances of mated connectors when individual connectors halves are from
different sources.
NOTE The complexity of demonstrating interchangeability at level 4 may be substantial and therefore should be
evaluated prior to the level being specified.
4.2 Classification into climatic categories
Connectors are classified into climatic categories in accordance with the general rules given in
IEC 60068-1:2013, Annex A.
Preferred temperature ranges and severities of the damp heat, steady state tests have been
selected, see Table 1. Any combination of these elements may be used, and should be written
in the format: for example 10/070/04, in the applicable sectional and detail product
specifications.
For a correct assignment of climatic category, the correct relationship between the upper
category temperature (UCT) and the upper limiting temperature (ULT) of a connector (implied
in the derating diagram(s) discussed in 4.5), as well as between the lowest category
temperature (LCT) and the lower limiting temperature (LLT) of a connector, see IEC 61984:2008
relevant definitions.

damp heat, steady state test.
4.3 Clearance and creepage distances
Permissible working or rated voltages depend on the connector end-use application and on the
applicable or specified safety requirements.
Clearance and creepage distances as well as proof voltages under specified air pressure shall
be specified in the detail product specification, based on the assigned rated insulation
voltage(s).
Guidance is provided in IEC 60664-1:2020 or IEC TR 63040, as applicable.
4.4 Current-carrying capacity
For each connector, the current-carrying capacity for the declared wire size (typically the
maximum) shall be specified in the detail product specification. It is preferable that the derating
curve for the relevant wire size, determined in accordance with test 5b of IEC 60512-5-2 is
prepared. Alternatively, it is allowed to provide only one value of rated current for a specified
wire size at a specified temperature as described in IEC 60512-5-1.
