Surface active agents - Determination of stability in hard water

This European Standard specifies a method of assessing the stability in hard water of surface active agents which are readily soluble at ambient temperature or slightly higher temperatures. This method is applicable to surface active agents soluble in water at 20 °C. It can be extended to those which are soluble at approximately 50 °C.

Overview

SIST EN 12458:1999 is a European standard developed by the Slovenski inštitut za standardizacijo (SIST) that focuses on the determination of stability in hard water for surface active agents. Surface active agents, also known as surfactants, play a crucial role in a wide range of cleaning, detergent, and industrial applications. This standard outlines a method for assessing the stability of surfactants in hard water conditions, specifically for those agents that are soluble in water at 20 °C, with the option to extend the procedure to solubility at approximately 50 °C. Accurate determination of hard water stability is essential for ensuring the efficiency and reliability of these chemical products in real-world use.

Key Topics

  • Surface Active Agents (Surfactants): Chemical substances that reduce surface tension between two liquids or a liquid and a solid, facilitating processes like cleaning, emulsifying, and dispersing.
  • Hard Water Stability: The capability of a surfactant to maintain its properties and performance in water containing high levels of calcium and magnesium ions.
  • Solubility Assessment: Evaluation of the ability of the surface active agents to dissolve in water at 20 °C, with possible extension to agents that dissolve at approximately 50 °C.
  • Test Method: A standardized procedure to determine the behavior of surfactants when mixed with hard water under controlled conditions.

Applications

The method specified in SIST EN 12458:1999 is widely applicable in several industries, offering practical value for:

  • Detergent Formulation: Ensuring laundry or dishwashing detergents remain effective in regions with varying water hardness.
  • Industrial Cleaning Agents: Validating the reliability of cleaning solutions used in industrial environments where water hardness can vary.
  • Quality Control: Supporting manufacturers in assessing product consistency and performance before release to the market.
  • Research and Development: Providing a standard reference for evaluating new surfactant formulations for improved hard water stability.

Applying this standard helps manufacturers and developers meet regulatory and customer requirements while ensuring product effectiveness, regardless of water quality variations.

Related Standards

For comprehensive understanding and broader application, consider the following related standards:

  • EN 12728: Surface active agents - Quality control methods for detergents and cleaning products.
  • ISO 4311: Methods for determination of water hardness.
  • EN 29888: General test methods for surface active agents.
  • SIST EN ISO 862: Surface active agents - Vocabulary.

Implementing SIST EN 12458:1999 in conjunction with these related standards can help organizations achieve higher levels of quality and compliance in the production and assessment of surface active agents, especially in scenarios where water hardness is a significant variable.
