Overview

SIST EN 60335-2-80:2003/A2:2009 specifies the safety requirements for household and similar electrical appliances, focusing on particular requirements for fans. This standard is harmonized under the European framework and is identical to EN 60335-2-80:2003/A2:2009. It covers products such as ceiling fans, table fans, and air-moving devices intended for domestic and similar purposes. Ensuring compliance with this standard helps manufacturers, suppliers, and users meet essential safety benchmarks and regulatory requirements across the European market.

Key Topics

  • Scope and Applicability: This amendment details safety requirements for fans intended for household and similar environments. It applies where the rated voltage does not exceed 250 V for single-phase fans and 480 V for others.
  • User Safety: Special focus is placed on the safety of persons, including vulnerable users such as children and those with reduced physical, sensory, or mental capabilities. Clear instructions are mandated to prevent hazards.
  • Mechanical Strength and Testing: The amendment introduces requirements regarding test probes and mechanical strength, specifying force limits during structural integrity tests to enhance safety.
  • Integration with General Standard: The requirements of IEC 60335-1 (General requirements for household appliances) are considered in conjunction, with part 2-80 taking precedence for fans, addressing specific risks inherent to these appliances.
  • Bibliography and References: The updated bibliographic section points to related ergonomic standards, such as ISO 13732-1 for hot surface contact, emphasizing the integration of safety and user comfort.

Applications

SIST EN 60335-2-80:2003/A2:2009 applies to a wide variety of electric fans and air-moving appliances used in household and similar locations, including:

  • Ceiling fans and ventilation fans in homes and offices
  • Portable fans such as desk, table, and floor-standing models
  • Wall-mounted and window fans for improved air circulation
  • Fans as components within domestic climate-control equipment, such as air conditioners
  • Fans in similar non-household but analogous environments (e.g., hotel rooms, small offices)

Manufacturers and designers rely on this standard to develop safer products, ensuring compatibility with EU market requirements and reducing the risk of recalls or market rejections due to non-compliance. Testing laboratories and product certifiers use these requirements to assess compliance during product certification processes.

Related Standards

When applying SIST EN 60335-2-80:2003/A2:2009, it is essential to consider additional and related standards, including:

  • IEC 60335-1: General safety requirements for household and similar electrical appliances
  • ISO 13732-1: Ergonomics of thermal environments - Assessment methods for human contact with hot surfaces
  • EN 60335-2 Series: Other particular standards addressing specific appliance types
  • National implementations and CENELEC harmonized standards: Compliance at both European and national levels is crucial for market access

Aligning with these standards assures comprehensive safety coverage and facilitates legal compliance for electrical fans and related appliances distributed in Europe and other regions adopting this framework.

By following SIST EN 60335-2-80:2003/A2:2009, organizations can ensure high safety standards, enhance user protection, and streamline access to regulated markets through recognized certification and conformity processes.
