(Main)Steel tubes and fittings for onshore and offshore pipelines - Internal and external polyamide powder based coatings
Steel tubes and fittings for onshore and offshore pipelines - Internal and external polyamide powder based coatings
The purpose of this standard is to define the internal and/or external coatings of polyamide powders applied by dipping in a fluidised bed or by spraying, or by roto-coating. These coatings are intended for protecting the outer and inner surface of steel tubes and their fittings (components) used as pipeline component parts. This standard may be applied for accessories (such as valves, pumps, screens, etc ... ).
This type of coating is used for the protection of buried, submerged or above ground pipelines conveying fluids at working temperatures between 0 °C and + 60 °C. Other working service temperature may be used after agreement between the purchaser and the coater.
The coatings covered by this standard are applicable to longitudinally or spirally welded steel tubes and to seamless steel tubes and their fittings components used for the construction of pipelines conveying liquids.
The internal coating of tubes to be used for the transportation of water intended for human consumption shall not affect the quality of that water to such an extent that it fails to comply with the requirements of the EU and EFTA regulations.
For this purpose, reference shall be made to the relevant national regulations and standards, transposing EN standards when available, dealing with the influence of materials on water quality and to the requirements for coatings.
NOTE An European Acceptance Scheme (EAS) is in course of development in relation to the CPD and the DWD. Its requirements will be introduced in this standard when completed.

Overview
SIST EN 10310:2004 is a European standard that specifies requirements and testing methods for internal and external polyamide powder-based coatings on steel tubes and fittings, applicable to both onshore and offshore pipelines. Developed by SIST (Slovenian Institute for Standardization), this standard plays a vital role in ensuring the protection and integrity of steel pipelines used to convey fluids. The polyamide coatings covered by this standard can be applied via fluidized bed dipping, spraying, or roto-coating, delivering robust corrosion protection for steel tubes, fittings, and associated accessories such as valves, pumps, and screens. Its scope includes pipelines that are buried, submerged, or above ground and operate typically between 0°C and +60°C, with provisions for other temperature ranges based on agreement.
Key Topics
- Coating Methods: The standard covers polyamide powder application by dipping, spraying, or roto-coating, suitable for both welded (longitudinally or spirally) and seamless steel tubes, as well as pipeline fittings.
- Surface Preparation: Guidelines for abrasive blast cleaning to achieve optimal surface roughness and cleanliness are provided, ensuring strong coating adhesion.
- Coating System: Involves a primer layer followed by a fully fused polyamide powder coating, designed for durability under varying pipeline service conditions.
- Application Conditions: Details on pre-heating and post-heating requirements to achieve proper coating fusion and thickness.
- Quality Requirements: Specifies visual appearance, minimum thickness, adhesion, impact resistance, flexibility, resistance to UV, electrical insulation, and more.
- Environmental and Health Considerations: For pipelines conveying water intended for human consumption, coatings must not compromise water quality, in compliance with EU and EFTA regulations.
Applications
SIST EN 10310:2004 is widely applicable across industries where steel pipelines are critical components for fluid transportation:
- Oil and Gas Pipelines: Protects against corrosion in demanding offshore and onshore environments.
- Water Conveyance: Ensures coatings are suitable and safe for potable water, aligning with European drinking water directives.
- Wastewater and Industrial Fluids: Provides enhanced protection in chemically aggressive or moisture-rich operational areas.
- Pipeline Accessories: Includes specifications for coatings on related components such as valves, pumps, and screens.
- Above-ground, Buried, and Submerged Installations: Delivers versatility for diverse installation scenarios, withstanding environmental exposure, soil chemicals, and UV radiation.
By standardizing these coatings, SIS EN 10310:2004 helps pipeline operators, manufacturers, and engineers achieve high durability, lower maintenance costs, and environmental compliance.
Related Standards
To ensure complete quality assurance and compatibility, SIST EN 10310:2004 references and aligns with several other international standards, including:
- EN ISO 8501-1: Surface preparation and assessment for steel substrates before painting.
- EN ISO 2808: Determination of coating film thickness.
- EN ISO 527-3: Tensile property evaluations for plastics (polyamide films).
