3 Terms and definitions
For the purposes of this document, the terms and definitions given in EN 13857-1:2025 apply.

4 Principle
Water can adversely affect the safety or reliability of explosives resulting in a failure to initiate or to
detonate completely. For the verification of the resistance to humid or wet conditions, a test piece is
immersed into water. Afterwards, the explosive is initiated, and complete detonation indicates
resistance to water.
In case of cartridged explosives, the test distinguishes between cartridged explosives where the cover
material is necessary to provide water resistance or not. In the first case the cover material is subjected
to a preliminary test to prove the suitability of the cover material to withstand mechanical stress during
loading of the explosive cartridges. In the latter case the cover material is cut prior to testing, in order to
enable contact of the explosive with the water.
5 Apparatus
5.1 Means of initiation, as specified for the explosive in accordance with EN 13631-1:2025, 4.1.4 or
6.1.5, as applicable.
5.2 Water tank, of a size big enough to provide for a complete immersion in water of the test piece in
horizontal position and assembled with means of initiation (5.1). The height of the water tank shall be
sufficient to hold water to a depth of at least 20 cm plus the diameter of the test piece.
Alternatively, a tubular water tank for vertical immersion of the test piece may be used. The tubular
water tank shall have a diameter at least twice the diameter of the test piece (see Clause 6). The height
of the tubular water tank shall be sufficient to hold water of a depth of at least 20 cm plus the length of
the test piece.
5.3 Means to verify complete detonation
5.3.1 Velocity of detonation measuring equipment for the start-stop method, as specified in
accordan
