Overview

oSIST prEN ISO 11461:2026:2026 - Soil quality - Determination of soil water content as a volume fraction using coring sleeves - Gravimetric method is an international draft standard developed by ISO/TC 190/SC 3 and adopted by CEN. This standard provides a gravimetric method for determining the volumetric soil water content using coring sleeves. It is applicable to a wide range of non-swelling, non-shrinking soils where undisturbed soil cores can be extracted and is widely recognized as a reference procedure for calibrating indirect methods of soil water determination.

Soil water content is a crucial parameter affecting agricultural productivity, ecosystem health, engineering projects, and hydrological studies. Reliable volume-based measurement supports optimal soil management, irrigation scheduling, and environmental research.

Key Topics

  • Sampling with Coring Sleeves: The procedure uses cylindrical coring sleeves to extract soil samples of known volume directly from the field. Proper sampling is essential to ensure the volume fraction determined is representative and minimizes compaction or disturbance.
  • Gravimetric Determination: Soil samples are dried at 105 °C until constant mass is achieved. The difference in mass before and after drying quantifies the soil water content.
  • Calculation and Reporting: The standard specifies the calculations required to determine volumetric water content, accounting for equipment tare weights and temperature effects on water density.
  • Uncertainty and Error Assessment:
    • Random and systematic errors in sampling and laboratory procedures are addressed, along with guidelines to minimize these errors.
    • The standard emphasizes combined uncertainty, considering both measurement and sampling variability.
  • Test Reporting: Guidance is included on required details for comprehensive test reports, promoting data transparency and comparison.

Applications

The gravimetric determination of soil water content as described in ISO 11461 is relevant for:

  • Soil Science and Research: Used as a reference method for calibrating soil moisture sensors and validating other indirect soil moisture determination techniques.
  • Agriculture: Provides essential data for irrigation planning, crop management, and assessment of soil moisture availability to plants.
  • Environmental Monitoring: Supports water balance studies, flood risk assessments, and climate research by delivering accurate moisture profiles in various soil types.
  • Civil Engineering and Construction: Informs suitability of soils for building foundations, earthworks, and embankments by defining moisture characteristics.
  • Legal and Regulatory Compliance: The method’s adoption in international and national standards ensures harmonized, reliable data for reporting and regulatory purposes.

Related Standards

Standards associated with the determination of soil water content and related soil hydrology include:

  • ISO 11465:Soil quality - Determination of dry matter and water content as a mass fraction by drying - Describes mass-based soil moisture measurement.
  • ISO 11274:Soil quality - Determination of the water-retention characteristic - Focuses on laboratory methods for water retention.
  • ISO 11275:Soil quality - Determination of soil water content - Gravimetric method by drying at 105 °C - Similar principle, with specific emphasis on gravimetric analysis.
  • ISO 5725:Accuracy (trueness and precision) of measurement methods and results - Referenced for guidance on repeatability and uncertainty assessment.

oSIST prEN ISO 11461:2026 stands as a key standard for gravimetric soil moisture determination, supporting consistent methodologies and enabling reliable comparisons across diverse applications involving soil hydrological properties. Its adoption underpins best practices in environmental monitoring, agronomy, and scientific research.

Soil quality — Determination of soil water content as a
volume fraction using coring sleeves — Gravimetric method
1 Scope
This document specifies a method for the gravimetric determination of soil water content as a volume
fraction.
The method is applicable to all types of non-swelling or non-shrinking soils where coring sleeves can be
used for sampling. It is not applicable to soils where stones, tough roots or other factors prevent collection
of soil cores. It is used as a reference method (e.g. the calibration of indirect methods for determination of
water content).
NOTE The determination of water content as a mass fraction is described in ISO 11465.
