Overview
oSIST prEN 4157:2020 specifies requirements for aerospace rod ends with self-aligning double row ball bearings and threaded shanks in steel, focusing on dimensions and loads for inch series components. This standard is part of the Aerospace series, ensuring consistency and performance for critical parts used in flight control rods and other aerospace applications. Developed by the Slovenski inštitut za standardizacijo (SIST) and harmonized at the European level, it covers key properties such as material, surface treatment, tolerances, and minimum performance under load.
Rod ends addressed in this standard are integral for safe operation and reliability in aerospace assemblies, particularly where precise movement and alignment are required under varying loads and temperatures.
Key Topics
Design Characteristics:
- Adjustable rod ends with self-aligning, double row ball bearings for enhanced motion and reduced wear.
- Threaded steel shank, supporting robust connection to other components.
- Options for seals or shields to improve protection against contamination, with manufacturer discretion on their use.
- Optional longitudinal groove for additional locking security.
Dimensional and Load Requirements:
- Detailed dimensions and tolerances are provided for various diameter codes, all specified in inches.
- Static radial and axial load ratings ensure suitability for demanding aerospace conditions.
- Precision surface finishes and heat treatment specifications for optimal performance.
Materials and Surface Treatments:
- Rod ends constructed from high-quality steel, with specific standards for heat treatment and hardness.
- Surface treatments, including cadmium plating and chromating, offer corrosion resistance essential in aerospace.
Operation and Temperature Range:
- Compatible with high-performance lubricants for operational temperature ranges from -73°C to +177°C.
- Load, torque, and clearance values ensure safety and functional reliability in dynamic environments.
Identification and Quality:
- Standardized designation system for clear identification of thread direction and groove type.
- Marking compliant with aerospace product requirements.
Applications
Rod ends as defined in oSIST prEN 4157:2020 are crucial in:
- Flight Control Systems: Used in linkage assemblies to ensure precise, reliable movement of control surfaces.
- Aerospace Structure Connections: Applied wherever pivoting or rotational movement is necessary under load.
- Ground Support Equipment: Suitable in highly loaded joints requiring alignment and durability.
- Helicopters, Fixed Wing Aircraft, and UAVs: Contribute to the stability and performance of control mechanisms.
The emphasis on self-aligning ball bearings and defined load parameters makes these rod ends ideal for use where misalignment or repeated dynamic movements are expected.
Related Standards
For comprehensive compliance and integration, the following standards are referenced or relevant:
- EN 2031: Steel specification for inner ring and rolling elements.
- EN 2133: Requirements for cadmium plating of steels, vital for corrosion protection.
- EN 2067: Technical specifications for rod ends with self-aligning ball bearings.

- ISO 3161: Thread requirements, ensuring compatibility with aerospace assembly standards.
- EN 9100: Quality management systems for aviation, space, and defence organizations.
- EN 9133: Aerospace quality management - qualification procedures.
Practical Value
Implementing oSIST prEN 4157:2020 ensures:
- Interchangeability and Compatibility: Standardized dimensions facilitate maintenance and supply chain efficiency.
- Reliability and Safety: Clear load ratings and material specifications underpin aircraft safety.
- Quality Assurance: Requirements for quality management systems align manufacturing with aerospace best practices.
- Corrosion Resistance and Durability: Surface treatments and appropriate materials support long service life even in harsh environments.
This standard underpins the consistent performance of critical aerospace systems by providing a clear, harmonized framework for rod ends used across flight applications.
