Overview

SIST EN ISO 105-A08:2002 is a standardized reference published by the Slovenian Institute for Standardization (SIST), adopting the International Standard ISO 105-A08:2001. This document is part of the ISO 105 series, which addresses tests for colour fastness in textiles, and specifically focuses on the vocabulary used in colour measurement. The standard provides clear and harmonized definitions for key terms related to colour measurement, ensuring consistency throughout the ISO 105 series. It is intended for use within the context and scope of ISO 105, benefiting professionals involved in textile testing, quality assurance, textile manufacturing, and related research.

Key Topics

The standard covers essential terms and definitions relevant to the assessment of colour fastness and colour measurement in textiles, including:

  • Chroma: A measure of colour intensity, indicating the degree of departure from grey.
  • CIE Colour Spaces: Explanation of CIELAB (L*, a*, b*) colour space and the calculation of colour differences (ΔE*, CIELAB).
  • Colour Difference (ΔE): The single-number metric for quantifying colour changes between test specimens and references.
  • CIE Chromaticity Coordinates: Definitions for x, y, z, which simplify the identification of colour in terms of chromaticity.
  • Standard Observers and Illuminants: Descriptions of measurements based on observer data and standard lighting conditions (e.g., D65 daylight, tungsten).
  • Spectral Properties: Terms like spectral reflectance, spectral transmittance, and spectral power distribution, key for describing how textiles interact with light.
  • Grey Scale: The standardized scales used for visually assessing changes in colour and staining in fastness tests.
  • Depth and Tinctorial Strength: How colourant quantity or effectiveness affects textile coloration.
  • Other Key Terms: Including hue, lightness, whiteness, fluorescent whitening agent (FWA), standard depth scale, infrared and ultraviolet radiation.

Applications

Adherence to SIST EN ISO 105-A08:2002 ensures a shared understanding of key colour measurement terms in a variety of textile industry applications:

  • Textile Testing Laboratories: For reliable, standardized interpretation of colour fastness test results.
  • Quality Assurance: Ensures communication clarity among manufacturers, buyers, and testing organizations when discussing colour metrics.
  • Research and Development: Provides a robust vocabulary foundation for studies investigating dyes, colourants, and their behaviors under different conditions.
  • International Trade: Harmonized terminology supports transparency and comparability in global textile markets.

Utilizing this standardized vocabulary helps reduce ambiguities, supports accurate reporting, and fosters the global harmonization of textile colour fastness testing practices.

Related Standards

The following related standards within the ISO 105 series support and complement ISO 105-A08:

  • ISO 105-A01: General principles of testing for colour fastness in textiles.
  • ISO 105-A02: Grey scale for assessing change in colour, essential for evaluating colour fastness visually.
  • ISO 105-A03: Grey scale for assessing staining, used to rate dye transfer during testing.

Additionally, familiarity with CIE (Commission Internationale de l'Éclairage) standards on colour measurement enhances understanding, as many technical terms are based on or reference CIE principles.

For any organization or laboratory involved in textile colour evaluation, integrating SIST EN ISO 105-A08:2002 and its related standards into their protocols establishes a foundation for consistent, reliable, and recognized colour measurement practices. This is key to quality control, consumer safety, and maintaining product reputation in both domestic and international textile markets.

ISO 105-A08:2001(E)
Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards bodies (ISO
member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through ISO technical
committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee has been established has
the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations, governmental and non-governmental, in
liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely with the International Electrotechnical
Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
International Standards are drafted in accordance with the rules given in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 3.
Draft International Standards adopted by the technical committees are circulated to the member bodies for voting.
Publication as an International Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the member bodies casting a vote.
Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this part of ISO 105 may be the subject of patent
rights. ISO shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights.
International Standard ISO 105-A08 was prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC 38, Textiles, Subcommittee
SC 1, Tests for coloured textiles and colorants.
ISO 105 was previously published in thirteen “parts”, each designated by a letter (e.g. “Part A”), with publication
dates between 1978 and 1985. Each part contained a series of “sections”, each designated by the respective part
letter and by a two-digit serial number (e.g. “Section A01”). These sections are now being republished as separate
documents, themselves designated “parts” but retaining their earlier alphanumeric designations. A complete list of
these parts is given in ISO 105-A01.
