Adhesives - Determination of tensile strength of butt joints (ISO 6922:1987 modified)

This European Standard specifies a method for determining the bond strength of a butt joint when subjected
to tensile force. The method can be applied to all types of adhesives. Although primarily intended for use
under ambient conditions, the basic method can also be applied to testing under a wide range of temperature
and other environmental conditions. The method requires rigid adherends that can be produced to the
required dimensional tolerances and that will withstand the forces applied to them during the test.

l’essai.

Overview

SIST EN 15870:2009 is a European standard developed by the Slovenian Institute for Standardization (SIST) and ratified by the European Committee for Standardization (CEN). This standard specifies a reliable method for determining the tensile strength of adhesives in butt joint configurations. By using controlled tensile force to test bonded rigid adherends, this standard provides a consistent framework to evaluate the bond strength of various adhesive types. The method is ideal under ambient laboratory conditions but can also adapt to various environmental scenarios, making it highly versatile for industrial and laboratory applications.

Key Topics

  • Tensile Strength Measurement: The standard outlines procedures for stressing butt-jointed specimens to rupture, ensuring that the measure of strength is accurate and repeatable.
  • Adhesive Versatility: Suitable for all adhesive types, providing a universal approach to comparative testing across industries.
  • Testing Conditions: While primarily designed for standard temperature and humidity, the method allows adaptation for different environmental conditions.
  • Specimen Preparation: Strict requirements for adherend material, dimensions, and surface preparation for accurate and comparable results.
  • Apparatus and Procedure: Details on a compliant testing machine, appropriate jigs, specimen alignment, conditioning, and execution of tests.
  • Data Reporting: Guidance for reporting test results, including breaking force statistics, specimen identification, failure types, and test parameters.

Applications

SIST EN 15870:2009 is utilized across industries such as automotive, aerospace, construction, electronics, and materials research. Practical applications include:

  • Product Development: Assessing and comparing the tensile strength of new adhesive formulations for improved bonding performance.
  • Quality Control: Ensuring consistency and robustness in adhesive bonds used in manufacturing critical components.
  • Material Certification: Providing standardized data required for regulatory, tenders, or contractual compliance.
  • Research & Development: Comparing adhesives under various temperatures and environments, aiding innovation in high-performance products.
  • Failure Analysis: Determining the modes and causes of joint failures under tensile stress.

Related Standards

The methodology and requirements of SIST EN 15870:2009 are linked with several other international standards to ensure comprehensive assessment and compatibility:

  • EN 13887: Guidelines for surface preparation of metals and plastics before adhesive bonding.
  • EN ISO 291: Standard atmospheres for conditioning and testing of plastics.
  • EN ISO 7500-1: Verification and calibration requirements for tension/compression testing machines.
  • EN ISO 10365: Classification and designation of main adhesive failure patterns.
  • EN ISO 527: Determination of tensile properties for plastics.
  • ISO 3534: Statistical methods and vocabulary applied in reporting and repeatability assessment.
  • EN ISO 472: Glossary for plastics terminology relevant to adhesive testing.

Benefits and Practical Value

  • Reproducibility and Objectivity: By following a harmonized testing procedure, results are reproducible and objective, supporting fair performance comparisons.
  • Industrial Relevance: High practical value for any situation requiring tensile strength data of adhesive-bonded joints under rigid, controlled settings.
  • International Applicability: As a European standard harmonized with ISO norms, test results are internationally recognized, supporting global trade and collaboration.
  • Quality Assurance: Provides confidence in adhesive bond reliability throughout a product's lifecycle, essential for safety-critical industries.

By adopting SIST EN 15870:2009, organizations can ensure their adhesive testing protocols meet stringent European and international requirements, resulting in reliable performance validation and certification for a wide range of adhesive applications.
