Overview
SIST EN IEC 61215-1-4:2021/A1:2022 is the latest amendment to the international standard focused on terrestrial photovoltaic (PV) modules. This document specifies the special requirements for the design qualification and type approval of thin-film Cu(In,Ga)(S,Se)₂ based PV modules. The amendment, adopted in July 2022, tailors existing requirements to address the unique properties and testing needs of these thin-film modules, contributing to the advancement of solar energy technology and ensuring reliability, safety, and consistency in PV installations.
Key Topics
- Reduced Mechanical Load Modules: The amendment introduces the concept of modules designed to withstand lower mechanical loads than traditional standards (now as low as 1,200 Pa versus the conventional 2,400 Pa minimum).
- Restricted Access Areas: Defines installation scenarios, such as utility-scale, ground-mounted PV arrays, where only qualified personnel have access-necessitating specialized labeling and documentation.
- Marking and Documentation Updates: New nameplate requirements mandate visible, durable markings highlighting “reduced mechanical design load” status and specific installation limitations. This includes unique model designations for easy identification.
- Testing Procedures: Updates static mechanical load tests (MQT 16) to accommodate modules rated for lower loads with clear conditions and safety factors, ensuring secure deployment in engineered environments.
- Qualified Installation Requirements: Emphasizes that modules with reduced loads are not for roof mounting, but are intended for professionally engineered, ground-mounted installations with restricted access.
Applications
SIST EN IEC 61215-1-4:2021/A1:2022 is especially relevant for:
- Manufacturers of Thin-Film PV Modules: Guarantees that modules comply with international safety and performance benchmarks, addressing the needs of the Cu(In,Ga)(S,Se)₂ technology class.
- Engineers and System Designers: Provides vital criteria for selecting and installing PV modules in utility, commercial, and industrial-scale solar plants, particularly where structural and environmental factors vary across the site.
- Utility-Scale Solar Projects: Supports use of modules designed for specific load conditions found in protected, ground-mounted arrays, allowing optimized use of materials and improved system efficiency.
- Certification Bodies: Establishes clear guidelines for evaluation, ensuring only compliant products are approved for large, ground-based PV systems.
Related Standards
- IEC 61215 Series: Forms the basis for performance qualification and type approval of crystalline and thin-film photovoltaic modules, ensuring a consistent approach across various PV technologies.
- IEC 61215-2: Specifies test procedures for PV module design qualification and type approval.
- IEC 60050-195: Provides relevant electrotechnical vocabulary, including terms for access control and skilled personnel.
- ISO/IEC Directives, Part 1 & Part 2: Guide the drafting and development of international electrotechnical standards.
Practical Value
Implementing this amendment ensures safe, reliable, and efficient solar module deployment in the growing field of photovoltaic energy. Key benefits include:
- Addressing the unique performance characteristics of thin-film Cu(In,Ga)(S,Se)₂ modules.
- Allowing for innovative system design by accommodating modules with lower structural loads-without compromising on safety for utility-scale installations.
- Reducing material usage and potential costs where higher mechanical loads are unnecessary.
- Enabling clear, compliant documentation for regulatory authorities and project stakeholders.
SIST EN IEC 61215-1-4:2021/A1:2022 supports the advancement and diversification of solar energy solutions across Europe and internationally, assuring quality and adaptability in a dynamic renewable energy sector.
