Overview
SIST EN 62707-1:2016/A1:2019 specifies the general requirements and the white colour grid for LED-binning intended for automotive applications. This document aligns with IEC 62707-1:2013/A1:2018 and is an essential reference for manufacturers, testers, and suppliers within the automotive LED industry. The standard focuses on the classification, measurement, and management of LEDs based on their electrical and optical characteristics, supporting consistent performance and quality in automotive lighting systems.
Key Topics
- LED Binning Definition: Establishes binning as the process of sorting LEDs into groups ("bins") according to specific performance parameters such as luminous flux, luminous intensity, colour, and forward voltage.
- General Test Requirements: Outlines procedures for conducting binning tests on LED packages, including preconditioning steps, temperature control, and practical guidelines for measurement intervals.
- White Colour Grid: Provides a structured approach to the white colour grid, an essential tool for categorizing LEDs for automotive lighting based on standardized colour parameters.
- Binning Test Procedure: Details time intervals for electrical and optical measurements, ensuring precise, repeatable results that match industry needs.
- Binning Currents: Establishes standardized binning currents for high-, mid-, and low-power LED packages, with clear rules for current selection tailored to application and technology type.
- Measurement Accuracy: Specifies tolerances for measurement reproducibility and absolute uncertainty, supporting traceability to national and international calibration standards.
Applications
- Automotive LED Lighting: This standard is vital for manufacturers of automotive headlamps, tail lamps, and interior lighting. By ensuring consistent LED performance through structured binning, vehicle makers can achieve uniform lighting quality and colour across large-scale production.
- Lighting Design and Quality Control: Engineering teams use the binning process outlined here to select LEDs with desired performance traits, ensuring lighting assemblies meet both aesthetic and regulatory requirements.
- Supply Chain Consistency: By adhering to standardized binning and measurement procedures, LED suppliers and automotive OEMs can streamline procurement, reduce variability, and minimize rework.
- Testing and Certification: Testing laboratories and third-party certifiers rely on these guidelines to verify compliance with international standards, which is crucial for market access and product safety.
Related Standards
- EN 62707-1:2014/A1:2018: The direct European counterpart to this standard, ensuring harmonized requirements across the EU.
- IEC 62707-1:2013: The foundational international standard for LED-binning in general applications.
- ISO/IEC Guide 98-3:2008: Reference for measurement uncertainty, essential for calibration and traceability in binning tests.
- ICS 29.140.01, 29.140.99: Classification codes for standards regarding lamps in general and other specific lighting applications.
By applying the requirements of SIST EN 62707-1:2016/A1:2019, organizations contribute to greater reliability and global comparability of LED-based automotive lighting. Reliable binning procedures and measurement accuracy facilitate product quality, safety, and customer satisfaction within the automotive industry.
