Overview
SIST EN 856:2026 specifies the requirements for four types of rubber-covered spiral wire reinforced hydraulic hoses and hose assemblies, suitable for nominal bores from 6 to 51 mm. Designed for hydraulic systems, these hoses are engineered to handle demanding environments and provide robust performance under high pressure. This standard applies to Types 4SP, 4SH, R13, and R15 hoses and covers their performance characteristics, construction, dimensional tolerances, and identification requirements.
These hydraulic hose types are intended for use with a range of hydraulic fluids as specified in ISO 6743-4 (excluding all flame-retardant HFD fluids), water-based fluids, and water. The temperature limits for the hose types are: −40 °C to +100 °C for 4SP and 4SH, and −40 °C to +120 °C for R13 and R15. The hoses are not suitable for use with castor oil-based or ester-based fluids.
This standard does not cover end fittings or hose assemblies for underground mining applications, focusing purely on the hose and assembly performance.
Key Topics
- Types of Hydraulic Hoses: Describes four specific hose types – 4SP, 4SH, R13, and R15 – defined by reinforcement, pressure rating, and temperature capabilities.
- Material and Construction: Specifies synthetic rubber linings and covers, with spiral steel wire reinforcement for strength and durability.
- Dimensional Requirements: Provides precise measurement criteria for internal diameter, wall thickness, concentricity, and overall hose dimensions.
- Performance Criteria: Outlines key test requirements including:
- Hydrostatic testing
- Minimum bend radius
- Flexibility at low temperatures (−40 °C)
- Impulse testing for durability
- Adhesion, abrasion, ozone, and fluid resistance
- Marking and Identification: Details mandatory markings for hoses and hose assemblies, including manufacturer, type, nominal bore, working pressure, and production date.
- Testing and Compliance: Defines frequency and methodology for type and routine tests according to industry-recognized standards (e.g., ISO 1402, ISO 6803, ISO 10619-2).
Applications
SIST EN 856:2026 is widely applicable across industries and environments where hydraulic power is essential. Key application areas include:
- Mobile and Industrial Hydraulics: Used in manufacturing lines, agricultural machinery, construction equipment, and mining vehicles.
- Heavy Equipment and Earth Moving: Offers reliability in demanding, high-pressure systems such as excavators and loaders.
