Overview

SIST EN 60712:1999/A1:1999 specifies the helical-scan video-tape cassette system utilizing 19 mm (3/4 in) magnetic tape, widely recognized as the U-format and particularly referencing the enhanced SP-format. This Slovenian standard aligns with EN 60712:1994/A1:1994 and IEC 60712:1993/A1:1993. The document outlines essential amendments for the U-matic system, specifying mechanical and electrical parameters relevant to professional video recording and broadcast environments.

This standard ensures interoperability, reliability, and performance in analog video tape systems using the U-matic format, supporting both PAL (625/50) and NTSC (525/60) color television systems.

Key Topics

  • U-matic SP-format Support: Defines parameters for two-head helical-scan video recording and playback using 19 mm tape for both H-format and SP-format, ensuring compatibility with global video system standards.
  • Reference and Calibration Tapes: Provides guidance on the use of SP-format reference tapes and calibration tapes. These tapes are essential for maintaining equipment accuracy, aligning with manufacturer specifications and electromagnetic compatibility requirements.
  • Mechanical and Electrical Specifications: Includes dimensional data for both normal and small U-matic video cassettes, with emphasis on SP cassette identification and sensing holes for accurate mode detection.
  • Audio and Video Signal Processing:
    • Detailing non-linear pre-emphasis and white clipping parameters for luminance channels.
    • Audio recording employs a.c. bias, proper phasing for multi-track audio, and defined noise-reduction characteristics including pilot tone detection.
    • Specifies chrominance channel design, including bandwidth, pre-emphasis, and recording current for color accuracy.
  • Performance and Quality Assurance: Outlines precise requirements for recording frequencies, frequency deviations, and time delays between luminance and chrominance signals-critical for broadcast-level quality.

Applications

The SIST EN 60712:1999/A1:1999 standard is vital for:

  • Broadcasting: Used by television stations and professional video production studios relying on U-matic SP-format cassettes for video content capture, archiving, and transmission.
  • Media Archiving: Ensures long-term preservation and playback consistency of historical footage stored on 19 mm U-format video tapes.
  • Equipment Manufacturing: Enables unified design and production of video tape recorders, players, and calibration equipment compatible with the U-matic SP-format.
  • Professional AV Systems: Supports interoperability for systems in educational, governmental, and corporate environments using legacy video infrastructure.

Related Standards

Organizations and professionals referencing SIST EN 60712:1999/A1:1999 may also consider:

  • EN 60712:1994 and EN 60712:1994/A1:1994 - European standards harmonized with the Slovenian standard.
  • IEC 60712:1993 and IEC 60712:1993/A1:1993 - The international standards specifying U-matic video cassette systems.
  • IEC 60958 - For digital audio interface standards, for systems transitioning from analog.
  • Other related ICS codes: 33.160.40 Video Systems - Covering broader video recording and cassette standards.

Summary

SIST EN 60712:1999/A1:1999 remains a foundational standard for the U-matic SP-format helical-scan video-tape cassette system using 19 mm tape. It ensures consistent, high-quality analog video and audio performance across equipment and regions-supporting media professionals in maintaining legacy content and system interoperability. For organizations handling analog video archives or supporting U-format video tape operations, adherence to this standard is essential.

INTRODUCTION
Replace the last sentence by the following:
The mechanical and electrical specifications for the U-matic H-format and SP-format are
contained in this standard.
Page 13
1 Scope and object
Add the following at the end of the first paragraph:
It contains the definition of parameters for the two-head helical-scan video recording
playback system, using 19 mm (3/4 in) tape cassettes, known as U-matic SP-format
(figures 2b and 2c). The system is suitable for 625/50 PAL and 525/60 NTSC colour tele-
vision systems.
Page 15
Add the following new subclauses:
3.3 Reference tape (SP-format)
Blank tape to be used for reference recordings may be purchased from the manufacturers
listed in annex A. The electromagnetic compatibility parameters and their specifications
should be specified by the manufacturers and controlled accordingly.
The model name is IEC U-matic SP-format reference tape.

Electromagnetic compatibility parameters and their specifications are indicated in
annex A.
3.4 Calibration tape
The calibration tapes which satisfy the following requirements will be available for pur-
chase from the manufacturers producing video tape recorders and players in accordance
with this format specification.
3.4.1 Record locations and dimensions
For the calibration tapes to be used for the purpose of calibrating the mechanical accuracy
of recorder or player in accordance with this format specification, 50 % reduction in the
tolerance shown in table 2, page 63 of IEC 712, should be applied to them in principle.
If necessary, the record locations and dimensions can be specially modified for some
calibration tapes in order to avoid some calibration errors or to help some calibration work.
Calibration signals
3.4.2
Two classes of signals may be recorded on the calibration tapes:
a) A series of conventional test signals:
Video Audio

– Pulse and bar – 40 Hz –20 VU
- 1 kHz –20 VU
- 7 kHz –20 VU
– 10 kHz –20 VU
– 15 kHz –20 VU
b) Special test signals developed by each manufacturer for product alignment. These
signals are not universally applicable too the products from all manufacturers and will
not be specified.
