Overview

SIST EN 13322-2:2003/A1:2007 specifies requirements for the design and construction of refillable welded stainless steel gas cylinders intended for transportable applications. Developed under the guidance of the Slovenian Institute for Standardization (SIST) and based on the European EN 13322-2:2003/A1 standard, this amendment enhances quality and safety specifications for stainless steel gas cylinders used to store and transport various compressed, liquefied, or dissolved gases.

Adhering to this standard helps manufacturers and users ensure cylinder safety, reliability, and compliance with European requirements related to pressure vessels and gas cylinders.

Key Topics

  • Design Requirements: Defines the minimum requirements for the design of welded stainless steel gas cylinders, focusing on robustness, resistance to corrosion, and suitability for refilling and repeated transportation.
  • Construction Specifications: Outlines mandatory manufacturing processes, including welding types and inspection protocols to maintain consistent quality throughout batches and production shifts.
  • Radiographic Examination: Sets out specific rules for the radiographic testing of cylinder welds, detailing frequency and extent of inspections for various cylinder types and welding processes.
  • Amendment Updates: Introduces changes that clarify terminology (such as the correction of "refillable") and update inspection requirements, reflecting the latest safety practices in the industry.

Applications

SIST EN 13322-2:2003/A1:2007 applies to a wide range of industries and scenarios involving the storage and transportation of compressed, liquefied, or dissolved gases. Practical applications include:

  • Industrial Gas Supply: Ensures safe containment of technical gases (oxygen, nitrogen, argon, etc.) used in manufacturing, processing, and laboratory environments.
  • Medical Gases: Provides safety for gas cylinders used in healthcare settings, such as hospitals and ambulances, where consistent quality and compliance are critical.
  • Transportation: Supports requirements for the safe and efficient transport of gas cylinders by road, rail, or sea, across national and international borders.
  • Specialty Applications: Covers use cases in food and beverage, welding, fire suppression, and other industries that rely on transportable gas cylinders.

Complying with this standard not only assures product safety and reliability but also facilitates market access throughout Europe due to harmonized requirements.

Related Standards

For full compliance and integration within a quality management system, SIST EN 13322-2:2003/A1:2007 should be considered alongside the following related standards:

  • EN 13322-1: Covers refillable welded steel gas cylinders made from non-stainless steel, complementing Part 2 for broader material coverage.
  • EN ISO 11120: Applies to refillable seamless steel tubes for high-pressure gas transport.
  • EN ISO 9809 Series: Sets requirements for refillable seamless steel gas cylinders.
  • SIST ISO 7800: Addresses general requirements for pressure vessels.
  • ADR (European Agreement concerning the International Carriage of Dangerous Goods by Road): Specifies broader transportation requirements for gas cylinders.

Practical Value

Implementing SIST EN 13322-2:2003/A1:2007 provides:

  • Enhanced safety for personnel and the public through robust inspection and testing criteria.
  • Increased durability and service life for gas cylinders, minimizing operational risks.
  • Streamlined production, inspection, and compliance processes for cylinder manufacturers.
  • Facilitated international trade and transportation due to alignment with European standards.

By following this standard, organizations can ensure their stainless steel gas cylinders meet the stringent demands of the modern gas supply chain, supporting safety, quality, and regulatory compliance.
