Overview

SIST EN 13763-5:2025 is a European standard developed by the Slovenian Institute for Standardization (SIST) for ensuring the safety and reliability of explosives for civil uses. Specifically, this part of the standard defines a test method for verifying the resistance to cutting damage of leading wires and shock tubes used with electric, electronic, and non-electric detonators, as well as surface connectors. This test is vital to ensure that these components in initiation systems maintain integrity and function under conditions where they may be subjected to mechanical stress, such as when being drawn over sharp edges.

The scope explicitly excludes detonating cord relays and electronic initiation systems. Compliance with this standard supports manufacturers, testing laboratories, and regulatory bodies in meeting essential safety requirements of the EU Directive 2014/28/EU on explosives for civil use.

Key Topics

  • Resistance to Cutting Damage: Defines how to assess the durability of leading wires and shock tubes against cutting forces that may occur during use, reducing risks such as short circuits (in leading wires) and misfires (in shock tubes).
  • Test Procedure: Describes sample preparation, test apparatus, conditions, and criteria for pass/fail results.
    • Preparation and conditioning of test pieces at specified temperatures
    • Use of specialized cutting damage apparatus
    • Evaluation criteria: For wires, absence of electrical contact with the cutting edge; for shock tubes, successful initiation and wave propagation
  • Reporting Requirements: Specifies what must be documented in the test report, such as identification of explosive, test temperature, and pass/fail outcome.
  • Safety and Regulatory Compliance: Connection to EU safety directives, providing means of conformity with Directive 2014/28/EU.

Applications

This standard has widespread practical value across the explosives industry, especially in areas including:

  • Manufacturing Quality Control: Ensures that detonator components meet durability specifications before they reach the market.
  • Product Certification: Supports compliance with European legislative requirements, contributing to safe market entry and regulatory approval.
  • Testing and Inspection: Used by laboratories to conduct standardized safety evaluations of leading wires and shock tubes for detonators in civil applications.
  • End-user Safety Assurance: Provides guidelines that help avoid critical defects such as short circuits and misfires during use in quarrying, mining, construction, and demolition.

The defined test method helps guarantee that essential initiation system components perform reliably even when subjected to mechanical damage, thereby upholding operational safety standards in the field of civil explosives.

Related Standards

For a comprehensive approach to explosives safety and performance, consider the following related standards:

  • SIST EN 13763-1:2025 – Explosives for civil uses – Detonators and detonating cord relays – Part 1: Requirements
Establishes general requirements for detonators and cord relays, referenced for terms, test conditions, and sample selection.
  • EN 13857-1:2025 – Explosives for civil uses – Part 1: Vocabulary
Provides essential terminology and definitions used throughout the series.
  • EN ISO/IEC 17025:2017 – General requirements for the competence of testing and calibration laboratories
Relevant for laboratories conducting tests to this standard.

Referencing these documents ensures an integrated and consistent approach to the safe design, testing, and use of explosives for civil applications.

By following SIST EN 13763-5:2025, stakeholders support safer, more reliable blasting operations, contribute to regulatory compliance in the European market, and ensure the integrity of critical initiation system components through proven and standardized testing procedures.

4 Principle
During use, the insulation on the leading wires and the plastic tubing of shock tubes can be drawn over
sharp edges cutting into the material. In case of leading wires, this could cause short cuts and in case of
shock tubes, this could cause misfires.
For the verification of the resistance to cutting damage, a test piece is drawn over a cutting edge whilst
being subjected to a load in longitudinal direction. For leading wires, it is observed whether an electrical
contact is made between the conductor wire of the test piece and the cutting edge. For shock tubes, the
test pieces are subsequently immersed in water and initiated afterwards; it is checked whether the test
piece initi
