Flexible insulating sleeving -- Part 3: Specifications for individual types of sleeving -- Sheets 240 to 243: Heat-shrinkable PTFE sleeving
Gives the requirements for heat-shrinkable (low and high shrink ratio) polytetrafluorethylene (PTFE) sleeving. It is normally available in expanded internal diameter sizes up to 12 mm in three wall thickness ranges as supplied in the low shrink ratio (sheets 240, 241 and 242) and up to 100 mm in one wall thickness range as supplied in the high shrink ratio (sheet 243). It is normally available in transparent milk white to light tan in colour and the minimum recovery temperature is 350 °C.
The procedures described in IEC 60216-1 for evaluation of thermal endurance are not readily applicable to PTFE: however, experience of product performance indicates that this sleeving may be suitable for inclusion in systems for operation at temperatures up to 250°C.
Materials which conform to this specification meet established levels of performance. However, the selection of a material by a user for a specific application should be based on the actual requirements necessary for adequate performance in that application and not based on this specification alone.

Overview
SIST EN 60684-3-240 to 243:2004 is a standard published by the Slovenian Institute for Standardization (SIST) that specifies the requirements for heat-shrinkable polytetrafluorethylene (PTFE) sleeving used as flexible insulating sleeving in electrical applications. This document addresses both low and high shrink ratio PTFE sleeving across four sheets (240 to 243), covering various wall thicknesses and diameter ranges. The sleeving outlined by this standard is widely used for electrical insulation due to its high thermal resistance, chemical inertness, and suitability for high-temperature environments.
Key Topics
- Types of PTFE Sleeving: The standard distinguishes between low shrink ratio sleeving (Sheets 240, 241, and 242) and high shrink ratio sleeving (Sheet 243), each offered in certain wall thicknesses and diameter ranges to ensure flexibility and suitability for diverse applications.
- Specification Requirements: Material conforming to this standard must meet rigorous criteria for dimensional tolerances, wall thickness, concentricity, tensile strength, elongation at break, secant modulus, breakdown voltage, and volume resistivity. These ensure the sleeving’s reliability and suitability for insulating high-performance electrical systems.
- Thermal Properties: Heat-shrinkable PTFE sleeving defined in this standard has a minimum recovery temperature of 350°C and is generally suitable for system operations up to 250°C.
- Appearance: The sleeving is normally supplied in transparent milk white to light tan colors.
- Testing and Conformance: The standard references essential test methods, including those from related IEC standards, to guarantee product reliability under real-world conditions.
Applications
Heat-shrinkable PTFE sleeving as specified in SIST EN 60684-3-240 to 243:2004 is used in a variety of electrical and industrial applications due to its high-performance insulating properties and resistance to extreme environments. Common uses include:
- Electrical Wire and Cable Insulation: Provides robust insulation for wiring in electronic devices, control panels, and high-voltage equipment.
- Mechanical Protection: Protects wire harnesses and assemblies from abrasion, chemicals, and moisture.
- Component Encapsulation: Used for encapsulating sensors, terminals, and connectors where resistance to high temperatures and chemicals is required.
- Aerospace and Automotive: Suitable for demanding environments where reliability and performance at high temperatures are critical.
- Industrial Equipment: Helps insulate and protect wires and components exposed to harsh industrial conditions.
When selecting a PTFE sleeving product, users should consider the specific diameter, wall thickness, and shrink ratio required for their application. While the standard ensures baseline performance, the final choice should align with detailed application needs and environmental factors.
Related Standards
SIST EN 60684-3-240 to 243:2004 refers to several foundational standards for flexible insulating sleeving and testing methods, including:
- IEC 60684-1: Specification for flexible insulating sleeving - Definitions and general requirements
- IEC 60684-2: Flexible insulating sleeving - Methods of test
- IEC 60216-1: Electrical insulating materials - Properties of thermal endurance
These related standards provide vital definitions, general performance requirements, and testing protocols that underpin the specifications in SIST EN 60684-3-240 to 243:2004.
Heat-shrinkable PTFE sleeving compliant with this standard ensures high-quality insulation and protection for electrical and electronic systems, especially where high temperatures and harsh conditions are expected. For engineers and specifiers, referencing SIST EN 60684-3-240 to 243:2004 is critical for sourcing reliable, high-performance flexible insulating sleeving.

FOREWORD
1) The IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission) is a worldwide organization for standardization comprising
all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of the IEC is to promote
international co-operation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronic fields. To
this end and in addition to other activities, the IEC publishes International Standards. Their preparation is
entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested in the subject dealt with may
participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and non-governmental organizations liaising
with the IEC also participate in this preparation. The IEC collaborates closely with the International Organization
for Standardization (ISO) in accordance with conditions determined by agreement between the two
organizations.
2) The formal decisions or agreements of the IEC on technical matters express, as nearly as possible, an
international consensus of opinion on the relevant subjects since each technical committee has representation
from all interested National Committees.
3) The documents produced have the form of recommendations for international use and are published in the form
of standards, technical specifications, technical reports or guides and they are accepted by the National
Committees in that sense.
4) In order to promote international unification, IEC National Committees undertake to apply IEC International
Standards transparently to the maximum extent possible in their national and regional standards. Any
divergence between the IEC Standard and the corresponding national or regional standard shall be clearly
indicated in the latter.
5) The IEC provides no marking procedure to indicate its approval and cannot be rendered responsible for any
equipment declared to be in conformity with one of its standards.
6) Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this International Standard may be the subject
of patent rights. The IEC shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights.
International Standard IEC 60684-3-240 to 243 has been prepared by subcommittee 15C:
