Overview
SIST EN IEC 63522-43:2026 - Electrical Relays - Tests and Measurements - Part 43: Proof Tracking Index (PTI) - defines standardized test methods for evaluating the tracking resistance of insulating materials used in electrical relays. This standard is essential for manufacturers, laboratories, and quality assurance professionals who need reliable and repeatable methods to assess material performance under transportation, storage, and operational conditions.
The main goal of this part of IEC 63522 is to specify procedures and requirements for determining the ability of relay specimens to withstand electrical stress and contaminant exposure, thereby ensuring the reliability and safety of electrical relays in actual use.
Key Topics
- Proof Tracking Index (PTI): The numerical value representing the voltage at which a material can withstand tracking (formation of conductive paths) without failure during the standard test. This characterizes the insulation's resistance to surface electrical breakdown due to environmental factors.
- Standardized Test Procedures: Testing is based on methods outlined in IEC 60112, which specifies the use of AC voltage between 100 V and 600 V and a defined contaminating solution.
- Evaluation Criteria: The test is considered positive (“pass”) if no tracking failure or persistent flame occurs over a preset number of liquid drops on the test specimen under voltage.
- Specimen Requirements: Clear instructions are provided on specimen size, thickness, number of samples (minimum five), and preparation, including the use of special specimens if standard relay surfaces are too small.
- Material Groups: Materials are classed into groups (I, II, IIIa, IIIb) based on the PTI value, helping categorize insulation materials for suitable application environments.
Applications
SIST EN IEC 63522-43:2026 is widely applied in:
- Product Compliance and Safety: Ensuring that relays used in electrical equipment meet international safety and performance criteria with regard to their insulation resistance and ability to withstand tracking.
- Quality Assurance: Providing manufacturers and testing laboratories with a repeatable method to assess batches of insulating materials or finished relays before market release.
- Material Development and Selection: Helping engineers choose suitable materials for relay insulation based on the standardized tracking resistance categories, supporting innovation and compliance in product design.
- Failure Analysis: Assisting in the investigation of relay failures by offering a recognized method to pinpoint insulation weaknesses that might occur under field conditions.
- Regulatory Certification: Supporting formal certification processes for electrical relays in regions where compliance with IEC standards is mandatory or highly recommended.
Related Standards
Implementing this standard may also require reference to the following documents:
- IEC 60112:2020 - Method for the determination of the proof and the comparative tracking indices of solid insulating materials. This forms the foundational method referenced for PTI testing.
- IEC 63522-0 - Electrical relays - Tests and Measurements - Part 0: General and Guidance. Provides general testing guidelines and terminology for the EN IEC 63522 series.
- Other Parts of IEC 63522: Covering additional tests and measurements for electrical relays.
Practical Value
Adhering to SIST EN IEC 63522-43:2026 provides manufacturers and testing organizations with:
- Reliable, internationally recognized procedures for measuring insulation tracking resistance
- Clear documentation and reporting requirements to facilitate audits and certification
- Greater assurance of relay durability, safety, and suitability for end-use environments
By following this standard, organizations help ensure that electrical relays remain safe and functional, reducing the risk of insulation failure, electrical shorts, or downtime in essential systems. This makes SIST EN IEC 63522-43:2026 a key reference for quality and safety in the electrical relay industry.

FOREWORD
1) The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) is a worldwide organization for standardization comprising
all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of IEC is to promote international
co-operation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronic fields. To this end and
in addition to other activities, IEC publishes International Standards, Technical Specifications, Technical Reports,
Publicly Available Specifications (PAS) and Guides (hereafter referred to as "IEC Publication(s)"). Their
preparation is entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested in the subject dealt with
may participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and non-governmental organizations liaising
with the IEC also participate in this preparation. IEC collaborates closely with the International Organization for
Standardization (ISO) in accordance with conditions determined by agreement between the two organizations.
2) The formal decisions or agreements of IEC on technical matters express, as nearly as possible, an international
consensus of opinion on the relevant subjects since each technical committee has representation from all
interested IEC National Committees.
3) IEC Publications have the form of recommendations for international use and are accepted by IEC National
Committees in that sense. While all reasonable efforts are made to ensure that the technical content of IEC
Publications is accurate, IEC cannot be held responsible for the way in which they are used or for any
misinterpretation by any end user.
4) In order to promote international uniformity, IEC National Committees undertake to apply IEC Publications
transparently to the maximum extent possible in their national and regional publications. Any divergence between
any IEC Publication and the corresponding national or regional publication shall be clearly indicated in the latter.
5) IEC itself does not provide any attestation of conformity. Independent certification bodies provide conformity
assessment services and, in some areas, access to IEC marks of conformity. IEC is not responsible for any
services carried out by independent certification bodies.
