Overview
SIST EN 972:2000/kprA1:2010 addresses the safety requirements for reciprocating roller machines used in tanneries. This Slovenian standard is aligned with European requirements and ensures that tannery machinery is designed, operated, and maintained with enhanced protection for workers and bystanders. The amendment aligns the standard with the EU Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC, incorporates updated normative references, and brings editorial improvements. Manufacturers, equipment specifiers, and operators in the leather and fur processing industry must comply with these requirements to maintain workplace safety, meet regulatory obligations, and reduce operational risks.
Key Topics
Scope and Application
The standard applies to reciprocating roller machines for processing leather and fur, excluding machines manufactured before the amendment's publication date.Hazard Assessment
Identification and mitigation of significant hazards, hazardous situations, and events specific to reciprocating roller machines.Protective Measures
Implementation of safety measures including:- Fixed and movable interlocking guards
- Electro-sensitive protective devices
- Pressure-sensitive edges or bars
- Emergency stop mechanisms
- Ergonomic considerations for operator interfaces
Control System Requirements
Integration of safety-related parts of control systems (per EN ISO 13849-1) with minimum performance levels to handle protective devices, guards, and trip systems.Noise and Biological Hazards
Guidance on reducing noise emissions during design and the consideration of biological risks associated with certain processing operations.Operator Information and Markings
Requirements for clear, permanent machine marking, safe operation manuals, and properly labeled safety signals and warnings, including specifications for electrical and hydraulic system labels.
Applications
SIST EN 972:2000/kprA1:2010 is essential for:
Tannery Equipment Manufacturers
Ensuring new reciprocating roller machines comply with current EU safety regulations and harmonized standards, facilitating CE marking and market placement across Europe.Machine Designers and Engineers
Integrating updated protective measures and control systems into product development to address significant hazards and operator safety from the outset.Occupational Health and Safety Management

Foreword
This document (EN 972:1998/FprA1:2010) has been prepared by Technical Committee CEN/TC 200 “Tannery
machinery - Safety”, the secretariat of which is held by UNI.
This document is currently submitted to the Unique Acceptance Procedure.
The first reason for amending the published standard EN 972:1998 is the revision of the EU-Machinery
Directive 98/37/EC into 2006/42/EC, requiring the adaptation of published European Standards cited in the
Official Journal of the European Communities under that Directive.
Additionally at this occasion the normative references have been updated, while also some other limited rather
editorial improvements and corrections have been made.
1 Modification to the Introduction
Replace the complete text with the following:
"This document is a type C standard as stated in EN ISO 12100.
The machinery concerned and the extent to which hazards, hazardous situations and hazardous events are
covered are indicated in the scope of this document.
When provisions of this type C standard are different from those which are stated in type A or B standards, the
provisions of this type C standard take precedence over the provisions of the other standards, for machines
that have been designed and built according to the provisions of this type C standard.".
