Overview

SIST-TS CLC/TS 50703-1:2021 specifies the requirements and testing procedures for joints of metal sheets, with or without insulating coatings, used as natural components in roofs, facades, or walls of buildings within Lightning Protection Systems (LPS). These components are considered when their interconnection does not ensure a durable electrical connection but are intended to safely conduct lightning current. This standard is highly relevant for manufacturers, engineers, and contractors involved in the design and installation of lightning protection for buildings using metal sheeting.

This technical specification focuses exclusively on the lightning current carrying capability and durability of electrical connections at joints of metal sheets. It does not address the lightning interception capability or the properties of connection clamps that link metallic sheets to the down conductor, which are covered in EN 62561-1.

Key Topics

  • Classification of Joints

    • Joints are categorized based on their electrical and mechanical connection types (e.g., form-locked, non-locked, force-locked).
    • Non-durable joints are further classified by their capability to withstand heavy (H) or normal (N) duty, and by their resistance to perforation (NP: no perforation, P: perforation up to 2 cm²).
  • Testing and Performance Requirements

    • Joints must be tested for their ability to conduct lightning current without failure, excessive perforation, or fire.
    • Tests include conditioning/ageing, marking durability, and electrical continuity under simulated lightning impulses.
  • Installation and Marking

    • Manufacturers must provide clear installation instructions and durable product markings, including classification codes.
    • Markings ensure traceability and correct application of LPSC in field installations.
  • Documentation and Reporting

    • Detailed test reporting is required, covering sample description, test methodology, materials, measuring equipment, and unequivocal pass/fail statements.
  • Environmental Conditioning

    • Specimens are subjected to salt mist, sulphur dioxide, and, for copper alloys, ammonia atmosphere treatments, to verify performance under corrosive and real-world conditions.

Applications

  • Natural Components in LPS

    • Metal sheets used in building envelopes can function as natural LPS elements, provided their joints meet the required standards.
    • Appropriate for incorporation on roofs, facades, and wall coverings where traditional down conductors may not be feasible.
  • Building and Industrial Construction

    • Targets new constructions and retrofits in residential, commercial, and industrial sectors where metal cladding is prevalent.
    • Assures that the LPSC joint's performance maintains the integrity of the entire lightning protection path.
  • Quality Assurance and Compliance

    • Helps manufacturers and certified installers demonstrate compliance with European lightning protection requirements.
    • Elevates safety for occupants, property, and equipment by ensuring reliable lightning current dissipation.

Related Standards

  • EN 62561-1: Requirements for connection components within LPS, including clamps and connectors.
  • EN 62305-3: Protection against lightning - Part 3: Physical damage to structures and life hazard.
  • EN 60068-2-52: Environmental testing methods for corrosion resistance, relevant for specimen conditioning.
  • ISO 22479 & ISO 6957: Methods for evaluating corrosion due to atmospheric agents, applied for environmental ageing of test specimens.

Employing the guidelines in SIST-TS CLC/TS 50703-1:2021 enables the robust selection, testing, and application of natural LPS components. Ensuring that metal sheet joints are tested and classified per this specification enhances safety, system durability, and regulatory compliance in modern lightning protection designs.
