Test of insulation of bars and coils of high-voltage machines
This specification applies to rotating electrical machines with rated voltages (Un) from 5 kV to 24 kV inclusive and with rated output from 5 MVA upwards and from 5 MW upwards for motors Requirements for machines with rated voltage above 24 kV should remain the subject of individual agreement This specification is also applicable to machines with rated outputs between 1MVA( 1MW) and 5 MVA(5MW) and with rated voltages of 5 kV and above, provided its use has been agreed beforehand In the case of machines whose windings are cured in the stator, tests on the separate winding elements are not possible; for these machines the requirements in Part B apply. The test of the conductor lamination insulation must however be carried out in accordance with 23 of Part A of this standard

Overview
SIST EN 50209:1999 is a key Slovenian standard that establishes consistent testing requirements for the insulation of bars and coils used in high-voltage rotating electrical machines. Developed by SIST in alignment with EN 50209:1998, this standard ensures the reliable performance and safety of high-voltage machines by specifying test procedures for insulation systems. It applies to machines with rated voltages from 5 kV to 24 kV and rated outputs from 5 MVA (5 MW for motors) upwards, while also providing for optional use on machines with outputs between 1 MVA (1 MW) and 5 MVA (5 MW) if agreed upon. The standard details both general and particular requirements based on the machine type and manufacturing method, with special considerations for stator-cured windings.
Key Topics
Scope of Application
- Rotating electrical machines with rated voltages from 5 kV to 24 kV
- Machines with rated output from 5 MVA (motors: from 5 MW) upwards
- Optional extension to machines between 1 MVA/1 MW and 5 MVA/5 MW if agreed
Insulation Testing Procedures
- Uniform procedures for testing the insulation of bars and coils
- Requirements for both individual winding elements and complete stator-cured windings
Special Provisions
- Machines with windings cured in the stator follow specific requirements (Part B)
- Mandatory testing of conductor lamination insulation per Part A, Section 23
Quality Assurance
- Ensures safety, longevity, and reliability in high-voltage machine operation
- Reduces risk of insulation failure in critical industrial applications
Applications
The SIST EN 50209:1999 standard is widely used in industries where robust and reliable high-voltage rotating electrical machines are essential. Practical applications include:
Power Generation
- Testing insulation in turbo-generators and hydro-generators ensures continuous and safe power supply in power plants.
Industrial Drives
- Supports heavy industries such as metal processing, mining, and cement production by maintaining integrity of large motors.
Renewable Energy
- Applies to large electrical generators in wind farms and hydroelectric installations, where insulation reliability directly impacts operational uptime.
Maintenance and Servicing
- Defines test benchmarks for OEMs and maintenance providers to evaluate and validate insulation condition during manufacturing, commissioning, and periodic maintenance.
Through standardized testing, operators and manufacturers can minimize the risk of failure, optimize maintenance schedules, and ensure compliance with international norms.
Related Standards
When implementing SIST EN 50209:1999, consider the following related standards for holistic high-voltage machine insulation management:
- IEC 60034 Series - Rotating electrical machines, general requirements and test methods
- EN 60085 - Electrical insulation classification
- EN 50209:1998 - European version of the same standard, for wider alignment in the EU
- IEC 60505 - Evaluation and qualification of electrical insulation systems
Each of these standards complements the requirements of SIST EN 50209:1999 and facilitates comprehensive quality assurance of high-voltage electrical equipment.
