14 1) The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) is a worldwide organization for standardization comprising

87 8.2 Addition:
88 Hedge trimmers shall be marked with the following safety information which shall be written
89 in one of the official languages of the country in which the machine is to be sold or marked
90 with the appropriate symbol.
91 For all hedge trimmers:
92 – "Wear ear protection", a relevant safety sign of ISO 7010 or the safety sign
93 specified in Figure AA.7. This marking may be omitted if the measured emission
94 sound pressure level at the operator’s ear in accordance with Annex I does not
95 exceed 85 dB(A); and
96 – " DANGER – Keep hands away from blade" or the safety sign specified in Figure
97 AA.1 or the safety sign specified in Figure AA.2.
98 – “Wear eye protection” or a relevant safety sign of ISO 7010 or one of the
99 safety signs shown in Figure AA.5.
100 The DANGER marking or symbol shall be readily visible to the user and shall not be located
101 on the underside of the machine.
102 For all hedge trimmers with a degree of protection of less than IPX4:
103 – " WARNING – Do not expose to rain" or the safety sign specified in Figure AA.3.
104 For mains supplied machines:
105 – " WARNING – Remove plug from the mains immediately if the cable is damaged

140 The handles shall be designed in such a way that each one can be grasped with one hand.
141 Handles shall be suitably shaped to be grasped securely and have a perimeter P between

160 19.102.1 An operator’s hand shall be protected from inadvertent contact with the moving
161 cutter blade with fingers extended from any handle identified in 8.14.2 b) 103) when held as
162 intended for normal use. Requirements are specified in 19.102.2.

164 19.102.2 The front handle shall be located so that the shortest chain distance measured
165 from the nearest cutting edge of the cutter blade to the furthest side of any handle is not less
166 than 120 mm as shown in Figure 108 a), Figure 108 b) and Figure 108 c).
167 If a handle is an integral part of the shaft of an extended-reach hedge trimmer, the shortest
168 chain distance from the end of the handle closest to the cutting device to the nearest cutting
169 edge shall be at least 120 mm measured from
170 – the end of the insulated handle nearest the cutter blade; or
171 – if the shaft handle is provided with a barrier or flange, from the rear of the barrier or
172 flange closest to the cutter blade.
173 A front hand barrier may be used to achieve the required 120 mm distance. The barrier shall
174 not have any openings with a minor dimension larger than 10 mm. The barrier specified for
175 extended-reach hedge trimmers referenced in 21.30.101 may be used to comply with this
176 requirement.
177 For machines where the cutting device or handle(s) can be rotated or articulated, the
178 distances are measured with the cutting device and handle adjusted in the most
179 unfavourable operating position(s) identified in 8.14.2 b) 108) and 8.14.2 b) 110).
180 Compliance is determined by measurement.
181 Delete Subclauses 19.102.2.1, 19.102.2.2 and 19.102.2.3.
