Overview
SIST EN IEC 63044-5-2:2019/A1:2025 establishes electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) requirements for Home and Building Electronic Systems (HBES) and Building Automation and Control Systems (BACS) deployed in residential, commercial, and light-industrial environments. Developed by the Slovenian Institute for Standardization (SIST) and harmonized as a European Standard, this amendment (A1:2025) aligns with the international approach to EMC in intelligent building technologies, ensuring system reliability and reducing interference in increasingly interconnected building environments.
HBES and BACS are critical for smart homes, commercial buildings, and automated facilities, enabling efficient control over lighting, heating, security, and other systems. EMC requirements are vital to ensure these electronic systems function correctly in the presence of electromagnetic disturbances generated by other devices or the environment.
Key Topics
- Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC): This standard defines essential immunity and emission criteria for HBES/BACS devices operating in living spaces, workspaces, and light-industrial zones.
- Updated Test Specifications: The amendment introduces changes, such as updated radio-frequency ranges (e.g., extending some tested frequencies up to 6 GHz), and revised power port testing parameters.
- Normative References: The document emphasizes compliance with related standards, notably updated versions of IEC 63044-5-1 and IEC 61000-6-3, for consistent EMC testing and assessment.
- Performance Criteria: Adjustments ensure devices reliably meet EMC requirements under standardized conditions, referencing the most recent editions and amendments of related norms.
- Applicability: Focuses on systems installed in environments typified by residential homes, office buildings, light-industrial workshops, and similar settings.
Applications
Implementing SIST EN IEC 63044-5-2:2019/A1:2025 is crucial for:
- System Designers and Manufacturers: Ensuring HBES and BACS components meet EMC requirements avoids malfunction or degradation from electromagnetic disturbances, supporting product reliability and market acceptance across Europe.
- Installers and Integrators: Guidance on sourcing and installing compliant devices for smart homes, commercial buildings, and automated facilities, supporting safe and robust automation solutions.
- Building Owners & Facility Managers: Complying with EMC regulations reduces the risk of costly downtime, interference, or equipment failures within their properties, particularly as smart technologies proliferate.
- Regulators and Inspectors: Provides clear benchmarks for verifying EMC compliance, supporting safe system operation and adherence to EU directives for electromagnetic compatibility.
Practical examples include:
- Intelligent lighting, heating, and HVAC automation systems in homes or commercial offices.
- Smart metering and energy management solutions integrated into building networks.
- Security and access control systems operating alongside other wireless or electronic devices in multi-use buildings.
Related Standards
This amendment references and works closely with the following standards:
- EN IEC 63044-5-1:2019 + A1:2024: Establishes EMC requirements, test conditions, and general setup guidelines for HBES/BACS.
- EN IEC 61000-6-3:2021: Defines emission limits for equipment used in residential environments, forming a core reference for emission requirements in this standard.
- IEC 63044-5-1:2017/AMD1:2022: Amendment providing up-to-date test and measurement conditions for HBES/BACS.
- ICS Codes:
- 35.240.67 - IT applications in building and construction industry
- 97.120 - Automatic controls for household use
Conclusion
SIST EN IEC 63044-5-2:2019/A1:2025 is an essential reference for ensuring EMC in intelligent building automation and electronic systems. By mandating rigorous, harmonized requirements and referencing up-to-date international and European standards, it supports robust, interference-free operation of smart technologies in modern buildings-crucial for safety, reliability, and regulatory compliance in the age of digital transformation.
