Dentistry - Nomenclature of oral anomalies - Part 1: Code for the representation of oral anomalies (ISO 16202-1:2019)

This document provides a nomenclature of oral anomalies and a code for their representation to facilitate data entry and support interoperability at the semantic level.
This nomenclature covers the various anomalies that can be found in the oral cavity. When needed, information on the localization of the anomaly can be added through the use of other codes such as ISO 3950.

Overview

SIST EN ISO 16202-1:2020, titled Dentistry - Nomenclature of oral anomalies - Part 1: Code for the representation of oral anomalies (ISO 16202-1:2019), establishes a comprehensive nomenclature and coding system for documenting and classifying oral anomalies. Developed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and adopted by the Slovenian Institute for Standardization (SIST), this standard is designed to facilitate uniform data entry and enable seamless interoperability in dental health records and information systems at the semantic level. The standard covers a wide spectrum of anomalies found in the oral cavity and helps clinical and research stakeholders adopt a consistent, reliable approach to describing oral health conditions.

Key Topics

  • Nomenclature of Oral Anomalies
The standard defines a structured terminology for a variety of anomalies identified within the oral cavity. This shared language supports clear, precise communication among dental professionals.

  • Coding Structure
SIST EN ISO 16202-1:2020 introduces a hierarchical code system based on digits and subgroups. The code identifies:

    • Whether the anomaly is developmental or acquired
    • The oral structure (teeth, periodontium, jaws, mucosa, frenulum, tongue, salivary glands, or lips) affected
    • The class and specific type of anomaly, with optional further granularity
  • Interoperability and Data Entry
By standardizing how anomalies are documented, the code supports accurate data exchange and semantic interoperability between different health information systems, electronic health records (EHRs), and registries.

  • Integration with Other Standards
The nomenclature can be combined with localization data through additional standards, such as ISO 3950 for identifying exact teeth and oral areas.

Applications

  • Dental Records and Clinical Practice
Ensuring the standardized recording of oral anomalies leads to improved patient care, precise diagnoses, and better continuity between practitioners, clinics, and hospitals.

  • Data Exchange and Electronic Health Systems
The coding system simplifies data transfer and aggregation in digital health environments, enabling efficient communication and integration between national and international oral health databases.

  • Dental Research and Epidemiology
Researchers and public health authorities benefit from harmonized data collection, which supports comparative studies, surveillance of anomaly prevalence, and shared research initiatives.

  • Education and Training
Dental schools and professional training programs use standardized nomenclature to teach future clinicians the globally recognized language and classification of oral anomalies.

  • Regulatory and Quality Assurance
Regulatory agencies and quality assurance bodies rely on standardized documentation to assess clinical practice, develop policies, and maintain high standards in dental healthcare.

Related Standards

  • ISO 3950: Dentistry - Designation System for Teeth and Areas of the Oral Cavity

    • Used in conjunction for specifying the precise location of anomalies in the oral cavity.
  • ISO 1942: Dentistry - Vocabulary

    • Provides foundational terminology for the dental field, supporting consistent interpretation of terms in ISO 16202-1.
  • ISO/IEC TR 9789: Information Technology - Guidelines for Data Organization

    • Offers guidance on coding methods for data interchange, supporting the efficient structuring of oral health data.
  • ORPHANET, OMIM, ICD-11

    • May be used alongside to indicate syndromic associations or rare disease references when documenting developmental oral anomalies.

SIST EN ISO 16202-1:2020 is a critical standard enabling accurate, consistent, and interoperable representation of oral anomalies, driving improvements in dental healthcare delivery, research, and information management worldwide.
